I very infrequently have a sensation of being stabbed with a needle, along with a jerking of a limb. This usually occurs in the groin or hip areas with a jerk of my leg. I'm grateful that this hasn't happened in public yet.

Do some of you experience this, too?

I'm sorry you're going through this. Have you talked to your doctor?

Best Wishes,

Leslie

I will when I next see her. It’s no emergency, and I’m sure it’s just an MS thing. I’ve read comments here about the sudden jerking happening, but not the stabbing sensation.

I'm glad it's not an emergency.

I get that all the time, especially when I am sewing! :-D

Not those pins or needles!

Oh, I get the jerky leg all the time! I can usually feel it coming on. But the 'stabbing' sensation in the groin area, I have not experienced. The 'stabbing' sensation is usually on my upper back, but sometimes on my side, like a label jabbing me. Please let your health care provider know of this and let me know what they say. I can usually make this stabbing stop, and the jerky leg, with a hot compress. I am happy that you got my initial reply, greaterexp :-D

I get the jerking or spasm of a limb every once in awhile..other then the spasms I get in my left calf that I have to take baclofen for due to the painful spasms. I never know when the jerking will happen, and thankfully it doesn't happen repeatedly like the spasm in my calf if I haven't taken my medicine. Hope you find some answers. Keep us updated when you can :)

I would email your neuro about this greaterexp cause it could be a pinch nerve. Try laying down on the opposite side of the hip that's bothering you. It might help.

But email him! 🤗💕🎄

It’s usually momentary and unaffected by position. I think it’s just an MS thing. It really isn’t happening more and is pretty rare.

PML, periodic leg movement. Mine can be quite embarrassing as I never know when it’s going to happen. My neurologist says it’s part of the ms and the RLS, sometimes I kick someone who is standing next to me. I only get it in my right leg, I have to try and walk it off as it is so uncomfortable. Blessings Jimeka 🤗

I get a burning on the outside of my left calf that turns into a stinging feeling that tries to turn into a full leg spasm, more like a bad charley horse! Sorry you are going through this. Feel better soon💓🤗🙏🙏🙏

I have had the pins and needles in my feet and hands for years. My right foot and right arm used to start bouncing leg and arm jerking and I would have to hold my hand or leg till it stopped. The last few years it has subsided quite a bit and doesn’t seem as bad. Not sure but maybe it’s from my pain pump helping. Prayers and hugs 🤗🙏😉 Ken 🐾🐾🎄

Yes. As my condition worsens the sensation has been happening more frequently. Also my leg spasms happen daily.

greaterexp profile image
greaterexp in reply tojackgaume

Do you take muscle relaxers for the leg spasms?

jackgaume profile image
jackgaume in reply togreaterexp

I do not. I am on so many medications for other problems that i really don't want another pill to be added to the 20+ i have to take. I'm 73 I can live with the inconvenience of pin jabs and spasms. I'm to old to die young.

something like that happens to me if I push too hard and am too fatigued.pins, jerks etc.....

For the last 20 years mine has been like a ice pick momentarily stabbed into some part of me. I have been trying to teach myself not to react, but it is so fast and surprising that it can take me down if I am not holding on to something.

greaterexp profile image
greaterexp in reply tonormwithms

That's pretty unnerving, no pun intended. I don't usually walk short distances with a cane if I'm having a good day, but these weird things could cause me to keep that cane handy at all times. Fortunately, these episodes have mostly happened when sitting or lying down.

Be careful!

I have had this as well. Not very often but I know what you're talking about. It's sharp and quick, my leg will jerk, then it's done. Since it's over so fast I think I just dismiss it in my mind. It has be awhile since it happened...I think.

greaterexp profile image
greaterexp in reply tomrsmike9

We will gave to ask our neurologists about it sometime. I doubt there is anything that can be done for something that happens rarely.

mrsmike9 profile image
mrsmike9 in reply togreaterexp

I will no doubt forget about it. It's so infrequent that I don't worry about it. Plus I don't even see the actual neuro anymore. I only see the NP. Probably because my MS seems fairly stable.

Ohhh wo..YES! I've had that happen. Sounds exactly like I what I experienced...same place and accurate description of the painful feeling also!! Thankfully it hadn't happened for quite a while. I like to think it's because of recent additions of certain supplements. But whatever it is..I continue to pray that it doesn't come back! Maybe we should keep in contact with each other about it??

Let me know. I'm a big believer in helping each other! 🤗🙏 Lauren

Thank you, Lauren, for weighing in. You’ve helped already. Though I sure wish it didn’t happen to anyone, I feel less alone knowing others have experienced it.

This last episode lasted longer than the first few, at least as far as the pain goes.

I haven't experienced the stabbing sensation but I know about the leg jerking but not in the groin area. My feet and toes tingle and swells. I am currently taking a water pill to hopefully control the swelling.

falalalala profile image

Once in awhile, I will get that in my foot. If I rub it out, it will subside.

Strangely enough, that only happens in bed.

I have the stabbing in my toes usually at night along with leg jerks. My neuro said it is related to RLS.

greaterexp profile image

Wow! I never knew RLS could do that!

I have it but not exactly in the groin but stabbing burning pain in the joint where my leg and hip joins. It hurts so bad when lithe stabbing pain happens that I will put me on the ground if I’m not careful. It will come from nowhere. My pain management PA just started me on a muscle relaxer for the pain and burning in my hip joint.

Praying yours feels better soon.

Donnie

hi. I get occasional needle sticks in various spots which I credit to my MS. I'm on both Baclofen and Tizanidine. also Lyrica. The unpleasant little sticks manage to slip through all of that. I tend to ignore them as soon as they're thru.

My, you’d think the medications would stop just about everything. I wish it would for you and everyone else.

I have had this in my hands, arms, and thighs, thankfully not the private pieces parts. That being said, I have a twitch in the neck and shoulders that comes out of nowhere but it feels like a shivering response, it rotates my head about 45 degrees to the right. Now for the stabbing sensations, I have them at random times, at work, my coworkers know that if I grunt in pain not to worry about it. I have had a few stabs to my left thigh that literally dropped me to the floor while walking. When the stabs are in action, it is 20 to 50 times a day.

Over the past 8 years, it has come and gone since my last relapse. What I have found over the years is that mental stress greatly increases the stabbings. Issues like downsizing at work, threats of "calibrating my pay", and the latest that was our 53 year old show car being stolen out of storage... it was one of 50 left. The stabs stick around after the stressful situation for a few weeks. Gabapentin does nothing, but treating the stress with very mild meds like clonazepam really helps out. I'm talking 1mg or less a day, but it helped me. Anything that will take your mind off the problem helps, be it a hobby, reading books and so on may help you as well. Keep in mind

greaterexp profile image
greaterexp in reply tojorrell

I’m sorry about the severity and frequency of your symptoms. It’s wonderful that you understand what’s going on about the stress and that the clonazepam helps. If mine keep happening, I may check into it. Thanks for your input.

Ahh, the joys of MS!

Spasms are frequent for me when I’m trying to rest. It’s a weird sensation that I feel before the actual jerk of my legs and right arm. I’m taking pramepexol sometimes and I switch off with other meds like baclafan or colosipan (sp). Needless to say, it’s a real sleep wrecker.

Good luck with yours, I don’t experience pain before the spasm.

the leg jerking is rare and least appreciated by my cat when, after a long day, when I sit down to watch TV, he decides to take a nap of on lap. It makes him jump a feet up. Luckily, there are rare, mostly when I get really tired.

good luck.
