My most recent hypothesis

Driving home from an errand yesterday (temp 101, very bright, a brief rain shower had left all the trees shimmering), the headache came roaring back and my eyes became achy again. This has been happening almost every day, headache and achy eyes during the day, relief at night. I wear dark glasses and a sunhat when I am outdoors; inside, I use as few lights as possible and limit my time on the computer and with the TV. It finally occurs to me that this is residual damage from optic neuritis so many years ago. It's obviously (now that I think about it, duh) something to do with light/glare/my eyes. I may have to become a bat, live in a cave and come out only at dusk.

Ask your optometrist about antiglare lenses. I had a pair that also auto darkened in bright sunlight. They're expensive if your insurance doesn't cover them but they are worth the money if they can help alleviate headaches and from having to live in a cave during the day.
