My bf and I recently joined the gym because we both want to lose some weight. We have went about 5 or 6 times now and it feels good. I have been doing the treadmill for about 30 minutes. Would like to try to do some others but not sure where to start. All suggestions are welcome.

Great that you are going to the Y, feels so good to exercise and just makes you feel better!

I recently started going as well about 2 months ago. Was frustrated with running outside because I can't go far and am very slow.

Found a machine I LOVE and get a great cardio workout. It's called an Arc Trainer. It's a little like an elliptical but even better on joints and burns more calories. Kinda a gliding motion like skiing. I was SO excited to find this machine that has NO repercussions on my body and makes me feel like I am really exercising like I used to.

Best of luck and keep up with good work 😀

A super way to up your metabolism is resistance training (weights). Burns calories longer beyond the activity and results in faster body appearance changes.

A really good fitness plan ideally includes aerobic activity, strength training, flexibility or stretching and for me balance/coordination.

If not already, consider increasing the incline on the treadmill.

Here's the hardest part for me since I love exercise but am not as great on the nutrition.

Weight and body changes are 10-30% exercise and 70-90% nutrition choices.

Bravo to you for all efforts!!!

erash I'm not so good at the nutrition part either but working on it. I need to strengthen my core so that my back is not always in pain. Took today off as my back started bothering me after yesterday. I do increase the incline and speed on the treadmill. Right now I can do 2.8 mph comfortably. The incline I can do up to 2, sometimes 2.5. If I start to get too hot I slow down the machine.

I've been wanting to try out a stationary bicycle , the kind you sit low to the floor on. I can't do any other exercise except water class for arthritis and yoga. Let me know if you try this type of bike.

Good luck with your fitness endeavors ASC2. Use it or loose it, right?

Hi good_enough! I have a stationary bike that I use. I do 5 minutes at a time and take a 5 minute break in between. This helps my legs react better, because I can't do more than 5 minutes at a time without a negative effect on the way my legs will feel afterwards. So I am doing 5 minutes pedaling and then a 5 miute break.

starlight5 does it help if you take rest breaks (brief) b/w exercises? Agree, core is essentials!

I do better with free weights, too small for most machines even when adjusted and I find that my stronger side compensates for my weaker side on machines. So not gaining benefits on my right.

starlight5 I have not tried the elliptical yet though my bf did it in PT for his back. He can't do it for too long but I may try it next time we go.

It's great that you are doing that. I find that pool therapy is the only thing that brings me back from a relapse, and then I add machines and weights to stay as strong as I can in between relapses because I feel that the stronger I am when a relapse hits, the easier it will be to come back from it. I keep forgetting to factor in the factor that I am aging, however, and it has taken me forever to come back from the relapse I had in June this year....of course I haven't taken into account the down time, either, but I am still working at it!

Well, I am trying to go back to the gym also. What I had learned when I join the YouFit Gym 5 years ago, is always start with treadmill or bike for cardio and overall muscle, but do not stay more than 20 minutes. Start go use the equipments to work with specific muscles low weight, 3 series of 30, then keep going without stop some days more upper body other lower body, but always stretch and do abdominal.

Depends which gym I go the equipments varies.Do no put weight over spine, or pressure. When I started I did not have any idea how to use the equipments, then I decided to use a coach to show to me good exercises, and do not stay only loosing water at the treamill. If you do more specific target exercise you will loose the fat where you need.
