Air Conditioner

Well, I believe we have been hitting some record high temps this past week. So, what better time for the a/c to break...especially for somebody with MS...or anybody with heat intolerance? Sigh.

Tinker-Belle. I would be so Livid and Bitchy. I'm so very sorry to hear you've dealing with this at one of the worst times (record breaking hot temps time) but hopefully you get it fixed fast and just think . This is only June, what does July and August have in store for us?

Agreed. I can remember not too long ago being “over Winter.” Now, I’m “over Summer” and it hasn’t even officially begun. Such is life...

Your snowflake and cool wind worked! It’s back on. I love fresh air but not when it is stifling hot.

It’s back on. Happy dance! Not money I wanted to spend but it probably needed serviced anyway, so at least now it is. Yay.

Good to go for the summer 👍

Look on it as a test for any higher temperature to come and now you are ready for whatever this crazy weather can throw at you. It's money well spent even if you didn't anticipate the extra expense. :-)

I remember when our unit went out in the middle of summer in Phoenix. At first, we were saying - "How much will this set us back?", but by the time they came to fix it, we really did not care. We would have paid anything to get it up again! Hope you get off easy and will be cool soon!

Okay, who needs a/c in Phoenix? We went there a couple summers ago, when temps were running 115° quite consistently, specifically for the heat!?!? We lived in El Paso for several years. Our house did not have an a/c. Back then swamp coolers were used, because the humidity never got high enough that they didn't work well, and they were far more economical with respect to the electric bills. I do know, that humidity levels have changed, and few people still have evaporative coolers anymore.....BUT, when we went to AZ that summer, We LOVED IT! Out all day in the high temperatures, as I remembered when living there. Just remember to drink (non-alcoholic) a lot! After growing up in the midwest, and living in places as H E X X-ish as the southern tip of Indiana, stone throw from KY, where the humidity was so high it made it impossible to get to the apartment complex's pool.....

El Paso was heaven. Still dream of moving back to the Southwest. Most likely, the Phoenix Scottsdale area, northern part? LOVE your heat! Hate the Humidity of the Midwest. Only Florida is worse!

I’ve heard that about Arizona, too. A dry heat... Funny, though, I grew up in S. Florida and I don’t remember using the air a lot as a kid. I can remember getting out of the shower and feeling like I needed to get back in because I was already sweating! Gross. Sorry. Back then, I would lay out in the sun with baby oil to get a tan so go figure. Pretty dumb. The theory that MS is more prone to folks who get less sun exposure sure didn’t hold true for me. I got plenty!

MarkUpnorth in reply toTinker-Belle

I got mine living in El Paso, the place where the sun doesn't shine 2 - 3 days a year! At least back then.

My favorite place, a blast freezer -45 degrees below, for at least 30 minute sessions!

I bet! Thanks. Air is on and life is good...

We finally broke down and got a new furnace and air conditioner late last fall. Ours was original to when our house was built (for others) some 40+ years ago. The air conditioner had not worked the last 2.5 years. But the furnace was strong! Okay, even when the a/c was still running, we seldom used it here in Chicagoland. Typically when we had company.

Otherwise, fans! Yes, I wilt quickly in the heat, but as long as that cheap window unit in our bedroom worked, I was good. I had somewhere to cool down. Squeaky (as in cheap/frugal since having to retire), I figured limiting the a/c to one room was far cheaper than the $800 electric bills I remembered from the many earlier summer months when money flowed much better working 80+ hour weeks, running my own companies. With the window unit, a $200 summer month would have given me a ....? $100 was expected!

This did manage our electric in the summer quite well, and it built up my tolerance to heat!!! I only used my cooling vest a handful of times each year with this type of training! Anyway, we have this brand new, never been tried yet a/c, guess we should try it? Still using a window unit! And last night, that was heavenly!

Not saying you should be so squeaky cheap as I, but with a window unit, you can get at least one room back down to near 50°F at night!!!

In Chicagoland, I think I’d have the opposite problem. I’d freeze to death! I can’t begin to imagine the cold you guys have. Beautiful, yes! I love to look at it but live where it is that cold?? Again, I can’t imagine. I’d have to hibernate three seasons of the year!

I lived in western suburbs outside of Chicago. I was worse than living in Oberlin, OH. One winter -40° to -20°. We carry round special de-icing spray to unlock the car door. And the summers can be unbearably hot. Especially if you don’t live near the lake. I don’t know how people cross the plains. But things have to be very bad. I grew up on Long Island where the temperature is pretty temperate. I never saw cold or heat like that. And Ga in August and Louisiana, the humidity with the heat. Before I was diagnosed I knew I was in the wrong climate . On Long Island - Humidity and ice-storms. Hurricane. Better than living in-land. Maine in a heat wave was dry heat, much better than humid heat. Nice summers near the shore area. Pretty.

My husband wants to get a generator because a/c broke down one summer and no electricity once for 7 days in a cold October/November. He has made this house perfect for me and him. But I keep saying I don’t want to retire here. Someplace with better summers. He’s not hearing.

Many times I have thought I really "don't need this", then, wham, I can hardly survive without it. Air conditioning is one. We lived in Texas for years and years and summer meant need for water...spray on ourselves wearing really thin material clothes, sit in the kiddy pool, sag in the summer chairs under the sprinkler...but no running or more than 10 feet walking and that was the end of gardening.... Here in PA where I now live the soil is re-mined and acidic to the point there is really no point in gardening unless you import tons of lime and soil...I did live in OR on the coast and that was perfect, absolutely perfect. I would return there in a heart beat if I had the money. Oh, lottery, lottery, my heart pines for a winning ticket!

Oh, yes, I meant to say I am really happy you have your AC. I was not happy to hear yours had gone "out". You had plenty of commiseration here. Maybe some billionaire somewhere could see fit to keep us with MS cool with a little grant to each of us assuring us an AC would be available and they'd even pay the increase in electrical bills. Yeah, sure!!

this may not be the perfect answer, but we keep one window air conditioner in our home,if the big unit goes out we always have air, they are pretty inexpensive for a small one less than $150 dollars,we have had ours for 10 years.the thought of no air conditioner,oh no!

Tinker-Belle profile image
Tinker-Belle in reply topamgarner

Really? Wow! I didn’t know they were so affordable. That’s a great idea.

Hi Tinker-belle! Ugh yes just experienced this myself! Record breaking temps this week in the southeast and ac went out the other day, reached 80 in house!!!!

Hvac was fixed yesterday! Needs a new part but under warranty just have to pay hourly rate🤷‍♀️ Bad storms came through yesterday too and cooled things off a bit but the humidity! Praying for all of us to stay comfortable this summer season!

Tinker-Belle profile image
Tinker-Belle

It was in the 80s in our house, too. Ugh. Ours was only a part, too, but not under warranty. Still, the service call cost us more than the part!

Mine got up to 88. Took hours to cool down after it was fixed

The same thing happened to me last week! Two and a half days! Hope you can get cooled off soon.

We had ours checked a couple weeks ago and found it was leaking freon. $8,000 later we have a new A/C. Argh....

We had to do a similar thing but they did try something with two thermometers so I can divert A/C upstairs or downstairs. Same for heat. It cost too much for two a/c units. But I may convince a portable a/c unit too my husband.

Yeah, air conditioner breaks usually in the worst moments. The whole summer weather was good and I used air conditioner on 22 Celcius and it was okay in the room. And the temperature without it was okay too. Maximum 26 grades Celsius which also ok. And just a few days in that summer were insanely hot. NAd these days my air conditioner broke down. Guys, I thought I would die. Thanks to the socool.sg/ aircon service which repaired it on time and could survive.
