Plasmapheresis (Plasma Exchange)

Has anyone done a plasma exchange? My doctor is recomending I undergo a plasma exchange as my flare up did not respond to the 3-day steroid treatment.

I was wondering if anyone has under gone this and what was the result?

I hope someone is able to offer some thoughts. I haven't seen many posts about it when I used the "Search" button. It was mentioned in the other post that it was offered after steroids were found to be ineffective.

I hope you'll share what you learn, since we don't appear to have many members who have gone through this.

I have not had one myself, but I’ve cared for plenty of patients that were getting it.

I had it done in the hospital back in 2015 when I was paralysed. It takes out bad antibodies and replaces them with good antibodies. ❤🌷

It helped me walk!!! Well that and God and my MS Specialist. I recommend it!!!!!!!!! 😀❤🌷

I had PLEX (plasmapheresis) in January 2019 and it was amazing! I had a central line put in because I have stupid small veins and that was literally the worst part. That and not being able to shower! I was in the hospital with severe optic neuritis (was later diagnosed with MS) and the steroids didn't really help either. I'd do it if I were you!

Thanks for your reply. I have small veins also. I would be doing mine at an outpatient center.

I think they would do a tunneled line on that case which is what I had. It's not so bad.

They did my pigtail (tube) in the main artery on my neck. For 5 days (every other day) 😊❤🌷

I did 4 treatments. Was scheduled for 5 and then I improved so much they let me stop.

They left the pigtail in my neck for 10days so every other day They did it 5 times. After the first time, I was moving my feet. After the second time, I was moving my knees to my chest and sitting up in bed. I was completely paralyzed for over a month because of my very first relapse ever. My Neuro had the plasma done on me in the hospital. It worked!!! There's really no risk in doing it. It even takes your fatty plasma away. Lol 😊❤🌷
