Has anyone here ever had plasma exchange for a relapse? Wonder why this was never presented to me as an option since IV steroids raise my blood sugars so high and didn't really help me at all other than getting my speech back both times!

dogdaddy Never heard of plasma exchange for relapses but you should definitely bring this up at your next Neuro visit as it sounds like this is what you need if you have a relapse in the future! Please keep us updated on they say.

I think expense is a big factor.

right so I was never given this option because I don't have insurance and the hospital aid program is picking up the costs...just as I thought!!! I'm in the middle of a relapse as we speak! I have a grant from the assistance fund good until 2020 that would have covered the cost. I keep bringing this up to my neuro's to no avail!!!

Is this the save as plasma pheresis? This was mentioned to me as an option if the steroids didn't work during my first exacerbation.

I think they're the same. You must have insurance!

Yes. I was at the Mayo clinic back then and it was at the time of my dx. It's never been offered by my current neurologist.

Never received it myself, but I’ve cared for a few getting it, plasmapheresis. This was in an ICU setting and they were not breathing on their own. I thought it was only a backup plan for when the steroids didn’t work for the really sick ones 🤷‍♀️

It's rated PROBABLY EFFECTIVE in MS relapses so again I ask why was this never presented as an option?

Probably because you reported some improvement or did not decline with the steroids. Good question for your doctor though!

but the steroids did NOTHING to improve my walking at all and my blood sugar goes through the roof with steroids. The only thing it helped with both times was getting my speech back but not to normal
