Newly diagnosed. I can walk and get around home/my town ok. My problem is walking long distances, like when you go on vacation, visit my daughter's college town, go to an event where there is no close parking? Ideas? Wheelchair? Scooter? Where do people park their scooters when they go into a store or restaurant?

ideas for when walking long distances is a problem
Hi Peony- sorry you have a reason too join us but glad you are her. I was dx in 1999, was pretty mobille at firstfifteenyears - cycled 150 miles a week. Not now. Now i have walkers, forearm crutches and a go go scooter to usefor long distances. I have an electronic lift in the back of my minivan. So i take it down to do any shopping.
I also have an AFO for my L foot drop helps a lot. You should of course have a handicap placard if 5his is an issue.
I agree with Memc that you should look into getting a disabled parking tag if you haven't already.
I'll be watching this post as I have similar issues as you. On most days, I can get around with little or no help, but distance is becoming a bigger problem.

When I was newly diagnosed, I thought I didn’t need the handicapped placard. Then I took a bus trip with my MS support group. They all got to park close to the bus and I was tired from walking from a far spot before I even got on the bus. Got that placard soon after. I don’t always use it but I figure any energy I save from parking close, I can use for other things.
So sorry you're now apart of this "exclusive MS warrior" group but welcome ☺️You're in good hands. I initially rejected a walker/rollator earlier in my diagnosis but know I absolutely love it. I need/use it outside of my home for any walk requiring more than 10 minutes. Mine has a seat that also comes with an undercarriage for storage. You can now order seat covers to personalize it a bit and there also other upgrades to make your use even more pleasant. After a bad fall on a vacation/shopping I could probably now do a commercial for the makers. Don't let MS mess with your time with your family and friends. I hope you check into this option. Peace and blessings ☺️🙏
Another thought is a rollator walker. I use it for long distances and it really helps. Went to Epcot with it last night👍
Hi Peony, Like you I was very active before my MS. Now I can only walk short distances. I love to be independent so We researched ways to make that happen as I can only get around with a walker and can’t do that for long distances. I bought myself a “Luggie” scooter. About $2000. I can get it in and out of my car/van by myself. It folds down very compact and will fit in a trunk. I can take it right up to the gateway of the plane, pop the battery out( it is a lithium battery) so can’t go under plane and they gate check it like a stroller so I have it as soon as we land. It has given me tons of freedom that I thought I had lost. In a restaurant I go to my table and my husband folds it up and the waiter always kindly shows him where to put it out of the way. I no longer miss sporting events, shopping trips or outings because I can’t walk that far. We have a condo in Fla and I exercise in the pool every day and I even drive it to the steps of the pool so I can walk right in and out. Hope this gives you one more alternative, good luck. Know how tough it is to be limited
My husband is buying me a collapsible wheelchair to go on vacation. He analyzed all models but found the only one that is truly collapsible for travel. If you would like me to share the site, please respond.
I had a friend tell me about a hoverboard + chair. It costs about $300 total. I haven't tried it, but she loves it.
Thank you everyone for your responses. I really appreciate it.
