Hey gang it's Fancyj.1959 and if you're wondering why I decided to do such a post today it is because I took a bad fall last night. I was in the dining area taking a picture for this chat room and I took a step back and felt my balance go took two more steps back and then I crashed to the floor. I hit my head hard and possibly put a chips in my left elbow.
After visiting the doctor this afternoon she confirmed I did have a concussion and we're going to wait a week on the elbow to see if it gets any less painful in if it does not we will then x-ray.
Now I'm asking for everyone to share tips they use to prevent Falls. I think this would be a great post for everyone. I generally try to keep a walker handy. It's just so hard not to take a couple steps away when you get distracted about what you're after or what you're doing xcetera.
The really stupid part of this for me is that I have a weight vest. It's just wonders to equalize my balance forward and back when I remember to wear it. It's bulky and gets hot in the summer but I need to start wearing it full time. I cannot afford to keep falling. This makes my 7th concussion, not all MS related. I hope everyone else realizes that if you also experience Falls, you cannot afford to keep going boom! Hey I know for one, I do not bounce like I used to! Haha!

Well I use my ROLLATOR in the house, I also can use it to sit on, have it be safe hind me when I am brushing my teeth so if I fall backwards I will have something behind me if I fall. I can also sit on it if I am making a meal. I have can also bring my meal into my living room. When go outside to go to a doctors appointment and go anywhere else
My biggest fear is falling down stairs. I fell last year and broke my ankle. I was in a wheelchair for 2 months. I hold onto handrails whenever I am going up or down. I make sure I donโt carry too much stuff that I canโt hold on with one hand. When walking around I just hold onto walls. And I use a cane outside. It forces me to look where Iโm walking and helps me catch myself if I start falling.
Amen! What I hate most of all is when businesses are not handicapp friendly. They seem to feel that no one should be in need of an access ramp if they're handicapped and using a walker or an electric scooter. In this day and time I believe it should be against the law for businesses to not have handicap friendly access. I guess most people do not understand what we go through. I hate to wish any type of handicap on anyone but I feel if these corporate Giant Stores that offer no electric scooters to shop in would change their tune if they were forced to walk a mile in our shoes as the old saying goes . I bet you if they experienced what we do they would immediately make changes to make us their stores more handicap accessible and friendly.
Pihokken, it's Fancy1959. If you are having to hold on to the walls to keep your balance I urge you to invest in a rollator for inside for house. I bought mine had a huge indoor flea Mall and it was in great shape and I got it for $50. It was the best investment I ever made. I also now have a lightweight aluminum Walker with front wheels that folds up easily in my car. So if I'm out and about I can use it. Do not take chances with falling. If your balance is so precarious that you need to hang onto furniture and walls please please get yourself more adequate safety equipment. These stairs can be life- altering if you're not careful on them. Please be careful and take care of until we speak again. Fancy.
No Greaterexp I have never been a huge butterfly fan. I was thinking more along the lines of horses, backpacking, or anything that reminded you of The Great Outdoors! I will leave the butterflies to you! Haha! Fancy.
One is getting to be very demanding as to the operative side of the design, it's getting a little confusing for my ms brain, I think I will have to consult with WAshingtongirl and see if she has any spare marbles.
Bubble wrap suits in pink, purple, and camo with butterflies and squirrel fur and stripes. Oh, my! My head is spinning too, jimeka ! Sadly, thereโs no rattling sound to go with the spinning. Guess my brain is empty. Iโd share a few marbles with you, but I guess those havenโt any to share! ๐ณ Ok, โfess up. Who has my marbles? Jesmcd2 ? jennie62 ? ๐
Thankfully I have NEW marbles! Thanks to the cog fog I can't remember who sent them to me, but I know it was from someone here. PLEASE forgive me for not remembering. : (
Marbles. Who lost their marbles. I think thatโs what keeps tripping me up is a bunch of loose marbles. I guess i need to start picking them up while Iโm on the floor. Then Iโll have plenty to share with everybody.๐๐ ๐
jimeka while I put my order in on bubble dress..can you figure something for those gowns that open in the back?Yikes....that is note quote my idea of a "gown"....
Now Jackie, we are getting a little refined and complicated here. I am only going to use a glue gun, as I am not proficient in sewing. I would not be able to do anything fancy, if you can sew, you can do the posh orders! Lol ๐
Like pihokken , stairs are my nemesis. I avoid staircases as much as possible. When I can't avoid one, I HAVE to be touching the railing or the wall. If I can't, its a problem. I gave up my 2 story house because of this and now live in a single story. I also avoid throw rugs and slippery surfaces. (Its quite the challenge to avoid slippery surfaces outside here in Western Washington. The rain and drizzle often make slick areas outside that I have to be vigilant to avoid.) There is one step from my condo into my garage and I attached a non-slip stair cover to it to give myself more stability. Its been working great.
I sadly had to rehome my cat recently because I couldn't avoid him tripping me. It was hazardous for both him and me.
A few months ago I started working out a bit at our local YMCA. This has helped with my balance over all. I'm fortunate to be mobile and able to do this. Its not a balance cure by any means but it has helped me.
Question for you can you get a ramp for that step going into your condo but if they do be sure it has handrails on both sides but since where you live it is so rainy see if they can put something thatโs not skid so you donโt fall. Just thinking remember Iโm the person that I canโt do stairs anymore. Just thinking be safety bye for now
ssdw1958 ...I donโt need a ramp for the one step. The non-slip stick-on stair cover that I mentioned works great. Maybe Iโll need to do something else in the future but for now the stick-on works.
Iโm happy you found a new home for your cat, Raingrrl . My new kitty has tripped me up a couple times already. My husband is more upset about it than I am. Iโm being careful, but can we ever be cautious enough? ๐
Fancy1959 you are truly starting to sound like me. It is my job to fall. I've already had enough concussions that they don't bother me anymore. I am glad you escaped with just a couple not so serious injuries!
I would also like to state for the record. All those marbles everywhere are probably mine. Sorry. they just leak out of my ears. Its sad really.
As to your question. I use a cane. but like you, When in the house I get nice and comfy without and boom! my backside is on the floor. Or my front. I hate addressing the floor. I think vigilance is the best tip or tool we have to keep from falling. Use our rollers or walkers or canes even in the house. even if its just a step or too. (man Pot calling the kettle black on this one. Geez!) Who the heck would think i would say such reasonable things. I am scared now. But seriously, we all have been told and we know better, yet like me we just take that one step with out. That is all it takes. I like the idea of the weight vest. I can se how that would help keep your swaying down. I should try that. I can just see myself over heating in that sucker awful quick. Also, I have the inability to have on tight things. I freak out. I adjust and readjust my watch a 1000 times a day. I have total sensory issues. And here I am word vomiting.
Anyway, I pray your elbow starts to feel better and you don't have to go back for another Drs visit and x-ray.
