Mattresses
Checking with a friend that got one she really likes. will get back to you and let you know. Lynn
My friend has a sleep number bed. She loves it. She tried a few of the other most popular before getting it. Hope you find the one perfect for you!
agapepilgrim i have just ordered a new one from EVE. If you go on google and put in coupons for Eve mattresses there is upto 30% off on some mattresses. I researched it and Eve came out the top mattress for firmness, coolness and comfort. Plus they give you so many days to return it if not satisfied. Mine comes Monday so I will let you know what it is like, also it was free delivery, blessings Jimeka π¦ π
Sleep Number
@agapepilgrim, I don't know anything about the newer types of mattresses because I still use the traditional box springs + mattress, but I do know that the life of a mattress is said to be only about 10 years, and so you're probably due to replace what you have. I also know that flipping a mattress as recommended makes it more comfortable. I flip mine every 2 months. When I first got it I was having bad back pain, but the new mattress helped that problem considerably.
agapepilgrim we have a bed that adjusts with split top and bottom that can raise and lower and vibrate! With memory foam and supposedly stays cool...we bought yrs ago and it was $$$ and the sheets are $$$ too. I think it's a tempurpedic. It's ok but not sure it's worth the price and I don't have that discretionary $ anymore.
My mother swears by her My Pillow --also $ and pillow cases are $ too
Sorry, sounds like I don't have any endorsements π
agapepilgrim I have a single wide air mattress that is on my side of the bed only. It stays at room temperature, and can be blown up to as hard or soft as you like it. The cheapest ones are in the camping section at Walmart, about $12-$15. We've taken the memory foam topper and folded it in half to my husband's side. After trying many mattresses and toppers, this is the best solution that we could find.
agapepilgrim I just got a basic pillow top Sealy brand like forever ago! π 10yrs? π I need a new one also, but will prob go back to that. It's soft comfy and I have had 2back surgeries, the scar tissue has healed into the nerves, yeah me! So trying to get comfy can be a challenge sometimes. But this bed works! And relatively inexpensive.π Hope this helps!

I have to tell you I not in a bed I am in a electric reclining chair. I am not crazy about it but it is the only thing I can get out of. It is some what comfortable. My height is 5'4" I got the smaller chair I should have gotten the larger one, I figured out to put a thick soft blanket under my heals for more comfort.
Too all of you if you ever get one of these chairs get the backup battery, when I first got it someone told me to get it. What a great idea when the power goes out you need it. Over the winter we lost power good thing I had back up batteries because I would have been stuck in the chair, no laughing matter. I do have to say when you change your clocks change your batteries and have a spare set.
And thaty 2 cents worth of information.
I sleep in my chair too. I'm tall, so I need that lift function just to get my hips level with my knees. But the "zero gravity" feature is amazing. Next to no pressure anywhere. I seldom wake up with a stiff back. Downside is that it doesn't allow for many sleep positions. Every once in a while, my body gets "bored" and wants to sleep in a different position for a while. I usually just get up.
Thank you recommending the battery maintenance. I haven't had to use the backup, but I also haven't changed the battery since I got the chair. Getting stuck would not be good.
Oh please change your batteries I don't want you to get stuck on whyour chair. Just think if you get stuck and you have to go to the bathroom, it won't be a pretty picture.
What do you mean by
"By the zero gravity function " I know you will say something so simple and I will feel like a jerk oh well that's life
Lol. No, getting good stuck would not be pretty, especially if I need to go.
I guess function isn't quite the right word. It's a recline ppsition. It's almostbflat, buy not quite. A slight bend at the knee and the hips so there's very little tension on the back.
I've got a Serta iComfort memory foam mattress... LOVE IT but really had to get that wallet out and dig deep... Worth it and I sleep great in fits and stops--MonSter will give me a few hours then I up to hit the bathroom... Bladder control is less than perfect for me, Oxybutinin and all--30+ MonSter battle and I'M STILL WINNING!!!
PS: I think that good sheets help. too... ALWAYS buy 400+ thread count... More expensive but get softer as they age--right now, my FAV set is 16 years old... They really last and are worth the expense...
Tempurpedic saved my back in the days before lift equipment became required for large hospital patients. I still have it and love it, but it was an investment.
I hate looking for mattresses. Husband likes soft and I need hard. I sleep better on the floor! Sleep number may be in our future. Got a split mattress about two years ago with his side soft and mine firm but it's not firm enough
Hi! I, too, was looking for a mattress upgrade when I woke up with terrible pain and numbness - several years prior to my diagnosis. My husband and I had spent a good deal on a king sized mattress that had developed significant "dips" within only a few years. Neither of us are very heavy, so it seemed the mattress was a bit defective. A friend of mine pointed me in the direction of themattressunderground.com. I believe that it's just a blog. Long story short...I decided that I needed a foam mattress to be most effective with the pressure points. However, like so many others with MS, I have little tolerance for heat, am a woman who is approaching middle age and can see hot flashes on the horizon, so memory foam was out. I decided that latex was the way to go, but found the cost somewhat prohibitive. We ended up going with a company called Brooklyn bedding. The mattress was delivered, and we had 120 nights to try it out. If we had not kept it, they would have arranged for a local charity to pick it up. I thought that was a win-win.
@agapepilgrim
I don't have any suggestion on a mattress but I go the MS Focus today they have an article saying they are accepting application for grants for brighter tomorrow grant . The grant could help you purchase the mattress
rjoneslaw thanks! Got that in the mail a few days ago, Applied. Online last night. Praying they will award me some grant money. Sounds like the majority are going to some brand of foam.
agapepilgrim , when we bought our last mattress (icomfort gel-cool for those of us who are heat sensitive), we were told that it was best to get a firm mattress and buy a separate topper than to get a mattress with a topper on it. (By the way, we LOVE the icomfort mattress.) A topper attached to the mattress will break down before the mattress does, so it's cheaper to buy them separately. We bought gel toppers through Costco for our guest beds. (Those mattresses were purchased through Costco also-very firm gel mattresses.) The gel toppers provide a softness without the heat that you get from a regular mattress topper. They are advertised as 'cool' gel... π
I tried a water bed for back problems and pressure points. Split sides because my husband is heavier than me , otherwise I would roll every time he moved. After awhile my needs change and I went for a pricey traditional bed, good sheets and toppler. (We had more discretionary money then) Worth my investment along with Botox injections, tizanidine..... but now each winter has been more challenging. My son says it is most comfortable bed still. I think I need to do a change in ecercise routine that strengthens my back. It hurts more lately. Less active with PT for foot and knee surgery. Seems harder to sit on edge of bed. Must have a good balance with exercise, body weight, medications and the bed you can afford at the time. But when I was pregnant, a foam matress on the hard wood floor was great too!
I have very bad back / spine issues. Herniated discs in lumbar region and also cervical, in addition to degenerative spine vertebrae. I have spent enormous $$ on mattresses. I finally got a Tempurpedic - firm and love it. I opted for the firm because I didn't want to sink in it making it hard to turn or get up. I've had it almost a year and it has helped.
@agapepilgrim
I just saw a commercial for mattress firm they are having a sale on cool top mattresses. I'm in Chgo. So check them out. I can tell that the mattresses cost a pretty penny.
rjoneslaw
rjoneslaw I don't even have a ugly penny! MS has ruined our budget!! That's why I applied for help from MS Focus. Praying they will come through for me so I can buy one at a reasonable price. I am collecting reviews at this time.
I just got a themperpedic mattress and I love it. I got the base with it that adjusts the head and at the legs. It also massages. They are pricy but so worth it. I can adjust it to what feels best for me and it differs some from night to night. But let me tell you I sleep so much better. My d mattress wasn't very old but it hurt my hips and I got to where I wasn't sleeping. I love my new mattress.
I hope this helps. Good luck in your search. Let me know how it goes. I'm
Sleep Number! You can change it! I have had spinal issues for 27 years. This is THE most amazing thing I ever owned!

To everyone regarding mattresses, I thank you for all your suggestions. I looked at each one, and won't be buying anything unless MS Focus helps me financially. I had no idea king size mattresses are so expensive. We are broke, using all discretionary income to pay for extra doctor bills and medicine thanks to my MS. I am draining our budget, and beginning to feel guilty. We were at the checkout lane the other day, and neither of us had cash, so we were going to get $10 cash back. The least amount the machine lilsted was $20, so we couldn't get any cash. Running that close in paying bills.! This all started when the dermatologist said my horrible rash was caused from a bug mite and I needed to exterminate our home. Since our mattress was so old, I knew it must be full of mites. I have a 3 * allergy for them. I went to allergist, did more testing, and was diagnosed as being caused by Capoxone!!! My $85 mite and bug proof mattress cover was a wasted of precious funds!!!!! I am soooo fed up with doctors. Even though my neurologist said it wasn't Capoxone, the allergist said it was, and Teva company agreed with her because of clinical trials resulting in rashes. I am so very depressed. I do have a gel-type topper that's supposed to be cool, etc, on our bed, Can't sleep without it, have a twin size one that I take with me when traveling. But I found date on mattress (while supposedly cleaning it for mites that were not there!) and it is 15 years old. But, when you're broke, you're broke! Today is a mentally gray fog day! So many problems MS creates that the public would never ever understand.
@agapepilgrim
I'm sorry to hear what is happening. I hope there is a bright fabulous light at the end of your tunnel.
Here are two quotes I have as my signature to my email. I hope they encourage you doing these trying times
"Most people never run far enough on their first wind to find out they've got a second. Give your dreams all you've got and you'll be amazed at the energy that comes out of you."
William James
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"When on the brink of complete discouragement,
success is discerning that the line between failure and success is so fine that often a single extra effort is all that is needed to bring victory out of defeat."
Elbert Green Hubbard
@rjslaw thank you. I like to read William James. My favorite quote was "If you don't feel like doing what you know you ought to do, go ahead and do that thing, and you will feel like you know you ought to feel." But that isn't true when we have brain advanced MS, and are not physically able to do what you know you ought to do like dusting my house. But I like that one. I believe I started on my second wind energy about 2014., to keep going.
In my view king size mattress are the best mattresses, which are topped with a layer of temperature and sensitive material. They can be expensive, but it has some fantastic memory foam mattresses In other words we can say that it helps to relieve the body pain.
rosaann
@rosaann yes that is what I want. Hoping for the grant.
