Disability benefit or just tough luck?

Hi, though my cervical myopathy affects my life in weird and not so wonderful ways, I have learned that if I keep quiet and do not do anything to aggrevate the damage already there, I can lead a reasonable life. This rules out the work I had been doing for the past few decades. I have been a mechanic for all my adult life, I stopped a few years ago because of pain in my back, hips legs and shoulders. As I was self employed I just didn't work or sign on. Now I find I am low on funds. Is it possible to get any benefits due to the spinal stenosis? I show a photo of the MRI scan. I was thinking of maybe a disability benefit as if I work the symptoms come back and according to the surgeon it may get worse, but he doesn't want me back for assessment to next year.

I would say yes because of the number of work hours you probably put in when you were working, and Spinal Stenosis is on their list of covered diseases.

Hi there, I have cervical myelopathy and had to have a op , if it is effecting as you say the only option is to have the op it won't get better it might get better after op some do some don't like myself it all depends on how you feel , you should get pip if you are like you say, good luck

Hi There

If you are UK based - absolutely although it's not an easy process so do get help. You have a chronic long term condition that will affect your manual dexterity, your pain levels, your energy levels, your ability to walk & also increase your risk of falls due to altered balance & sensations. Youe are entitled to put in a claim for Employment Support Allowance if you are of working age & unable to work, but also Personal Independence Payment which you can claim whether working or not. Do check out myelopathy.org for a list of benefits available to folk like us

Best wishes

yes it is possible to get disability for spinal stenosis. If your doctor and medical records document that you cannot work, maybe you will be approved when you apply, but if you need to hire an attorney because they deny you it takes a couple of years before they hear your case and the judge gives a decision on your case.
