I agree that getting fatty acids into your system is necessary. Fatty acids help the skin to heal along with zinc and other nutrients. Using natural, organic shampoos and conditioners (there are several good ones available on Amazon) would be beneficial, as well. I find that formulas with a good amount of jojoba oil in them work well. Tea Tree Oil shampoo is also widely used for healing and soothing the scalp.
Zinc, Selenium (selenomethionine), B12 (methylcobalamin), B Vitamins (from a good, methylated B Complex formula), Vitamin C, natural Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Fish Oil, Magnesium, and Potassium are important nutrients for skin and overall health in general. Deficiencies in any of these can cause skin issues.
Your skin and scalp are supposed to have a healthy acid mantle. Skin should never be alkaline. When it is, you might start to see skin issues develop. Unfortunately, soaps and shampoos/ conditioners are alkaline. So if your skin is a weak link, problems can start to arise.
I use a homemade Apple Cider Vinegar spritz on my skin and scalp after I shower, to reacidify, before I put on body moisturizer. (I will list the recipe below.) ACV is also antimicrobial and antifungal, so it can help keep any critters in balance.
I find this recipe to be very soothing:
[Note: This is spray and stay; you don't have to rinse it off.]
(In a 2 oz glass spray bottle):
*1 part ACV (with the Mother)
*3 to 4 parts water
*1/4 - 3/4 tsp sea salt (play around with the amount--more salt gives hair more texture and volume)
*(optional) 2 drops Rose Geranium essential oil --OR-- 1 drop Rose Geranium and 1 drop Frankincense oil
(Other options are: Rosemary, Lavender, Chamomile, Peppermint, or Tea Tree to name a few.)
*I find that 2-5 drops total (per 2 oz), for sensitive skin, gives a light, calming fragrance without irritation. Essential oils are powerful. They can work wonders if used wisely and judiciously. Using less is the rule of thumb. (Otherwise, you run the risk of your system becoming sensitized to them to the point that you will not be able to use them at all.)
**I almost forgot to add that if there is noticeable inflammation/itching on the scalp, you can add a healthy squirt of OTC Hydrocortisone 1% cream in the ACV spritz mixture and shake well to mix. You can also mix a separate spray bottle with just the Hydrocortisone, water, and a pinch of salt to use when you are trying to tamp down inflammation. (Either option should help calm the irritation and/or itching.)
Note: Hydrocortisone 1% is much milder than what you were prescribed; and you are also diluting it. I have found that medications in diluted amounts, over the long term, quite often can be more effective than when used at full strength.
[Lastly, skin issues are very often a result of food, chemical, and environmental sensitivities, or systemic bacterial/fungal overgrowth. For example, systemic candida (fungal) can cause a variety of skin symptoms: redness, tingling, soreness, itching, burning, and rashes or sores that are slow to heal. But, by greatly reducing sugar in the diet, not feeding the candida, noticeable improvement can occur. If you should find that topicals aren't making any lasting improvement, you may need to investigate other possible causes.]
Hope some of the info turns out to be helpful and that you get some relief very soon.😊
