Hi

Well yesterday our Doctor came to speak to Les and spoke to him about his wishes in the future and discussed DNR which Les has put in place 😩.

Also they spoke about hospital visits and Les requested not to be taken to hospital at any time , the doctor agreed to this and had put in Les’s plan, so my question is as I’m quite concerned, if a ambulance is called and Les is very poorly i.e sepsis what happens ?

hi Dee

We went through this. Gill had an infection and the call out doctor arrived and decided hospital was the best solution

I mentioned Gill had asked not to go into hospital and I was met with some sense of scepticism

I found gills plan and it was clearly there so no ambulance and no hospital

We treated the infection at home

On the subject of DNR

Close friends had a very bad experience where help was called and the DNR became central to the moment. They, for some reason, didn’t have it to hand and this had consequences

The story made me look at our DNR and how we managed it

On review I noted there was a missing initial on page 2

I raised it with the hospice and they assured me it wasn’t an issue as the doctor had signed at the bottom . I shared our friends story with them and on reflection they issued a new DNR with all the I’s dotted and t’s crossed

It was worth the review

Hopefully you don’t need any of this but it might help someone

Hello Dee,We went through that experience a month ago.

After an appalling experience when he was admitted to Stoke Mandeville late June last year for a return of ulcerative colitis, we both vowed he would never go into a hospital again.

He was left caked in shit for at least three days lost so much weight his upper arm went down 2 centimetres, 3 pressure ulcers, never had his teeth cleaned and was assaulted by a member of staff.

Oh and he got covid.

A week and a half later he was still very ill luckily he was given a bed at our local hospice.

Fast track to last month, he had yet another chest infection which became sepsis.

I kept him at home and he was seen by "hospital at home " they were brilliant.

IV fluids and antibiotics plus all the tests he would have in hospital, not xrays or scans..

Damn site better and safer than in bloody hospital! Bit scary though

My friend decided that she didn't want to go into hospital, one, because of knowing that most medical professionals didn't understand MSA , and two, because of the upheaval of moving her. I did however arrange for us to have an emergency pack of antibiotics at home.

If it's Les' decision not to be admitted into hospital, they cannot force him to go.

I forgot to ask.

Has Les got a lasting power of attorney in place?

I would really recommend he does that.
