Still finds some a way to make us laugh

Startreckersdaughter profile image

Me and mum have been allowed to keep seeing dad in all this drama which we are so grateful, my dads speech has been really hard to understand and for 2 days he has been trying to tell us something important. He was adamant that me and mum should do something but we couldn’t get what , then today we got it he wanted the nurse to check our temperatures 🤒 is case we was infected 😂glad to say we passed but just goes to show the body might be failing but the mind is still sharp 😂 it’s made me chuckle all day cheeky sod 😂

Wonderful!!

😂 Relating to this. Dad keeps us all in line with what we call 'the look'! We regularly get peals of laughter coming from his room, when the visiting carers are in. :)

Write the alphabet and numbers on a sheet of paper so that he can spell out what hes trying to communicate to you

Oh yes! I relate to this too. The look that means there is something that I want to communicate and you spend hours trying to understand and then when you finally figure it out is is an amusing comment. My most frustrating thing was that often we had gone all day with very little speech or communication and then I would get him upstairs ( we had a lift) and dressed for bed, hoist him onto the bed and suddenly he had a voice!! And he would ask if I had locked the door or put the alarm on, not something of great significance or insight, just “had I locked the door”!! Makes me smile! Loved that man.

Ah yes, the 'I'm really trying to speak' face!. Quite often it's not something important, Dad just gets stuck in the effort. :) I feel it goes a long way just to acknowledge that he is trying to communicate. Because I wonder if he always knows if his words have come out OK or not. (maybe like with stroke patients, when they think they are speaking and it's not coming out). Im really into his tiny facial expressions, stares and pointing fingers..they convey a lot. A couple of times he's managed a single word, and I know he's asking me something important, and it blows my mind, cos then I know he's still in there. Special times. xx
