Does anyone know if hydroxyurea is only harmful to a baby if the mum is the one who is taking the drug?

Hi Monc, I have asked Prof Claire Harrison for some advice for you and her reply is :

Advise not to take it. Some data suggests risks to baby would advise change either before getting pregnant and try not to get pregnant on drug if you do then let your doctor know as soon as possible. Risk very small early in pregnancy.

You should speak to your haematologist about this. I hope this helps, if you would like any further information or advice please email us at info@mpdvoice.org.uk. Kind regards, Maz.

hi monic, as a midwife and a pvr sufferer who tried hydrox and had a severe febrile reaction to it- it is a form of oral chemotherapy and a bone marrow supressant, so i wouldnt take it without the ok of your obsetric team especially in the first trimester , or an obstetric physician specializing in haematology, good luck, cheers jo-ann

Thanks for the replies. It's my husband who is on hydroxyurea and my GP wasn't sure if the risks were the same for a male and female. She did say to check with haem but we are not back at hosp for a few weeks and thought I would find out on here.
