inulin
Yes, my husband and I have been taking a spoonful every morning for years. It helps the immune system and has many other benefits. Would definitely recommend.
I prefer to get it via foods that are rich in it - leeks, onions, whole wheat and barley, bananas, asparagus (good excuse to treat myself there!). I have certainly felt better, and lost weight, since going on a Mediterranean diet, and increasing the inulin-containing foods is part of that.
Chicory coffee is a good source too.
Thank you for your replies, I forgot to mention in my post that I have PV and am on Hydroxy
Hi AngiP. I have PV, diagnosed 20 October 2023. In 2013 I was suffering with my bowels, certain things I ate upset it. A dietician referred me to a digestive specialist. Told to cut out gluten, wheat and dairy. I'm not coeliac but when I cut them out what a change. I was at that point I think when I was heading for some kind of breakdown. I also follow FODMAP way of eating. She had said to me before I was discharged do not eat anything with inulin in as that is a type of fibre which would upset my bowels. It's found in bananas which I loved. If you go into the Free From sections in the supermarkets, you will see food such as chocolate bars that have inulin as an ingredient.
Inulin is a soluble fibre and has several health benefits, namely feed the good bacteria in your gut which in turn release nutrients that the body absorbs, reduces inflammation and keeps everything moving. It is however a processed ingredient, maybe better to get all that fibre from natural sources ie lots of fruit, veg and shredded wheat
