Hi, I have mf and take pegysys and low dose asprin. I have been suffering with lower right back pain, have seen a physio who said is is sacroiliac joint pain and have been given some exercises. Just wondering if it ok to take turmeric when on 75mg asprin daily. Thank you

Tumeric (curcumin) can add to blood thinning and act as anticoagulant, two related but distinct conditions. In particular the newer high activity curcumin formulas enhance the effects. Common Omega 3 supplements add additional blood thinning.

I take fish oil for my other condition and aspirin for PV, and get occasional bruises and easy bleeding from small cuts. My MPN specialist is ok with this, but it s unnerving. Bruising and easy bleed are thinning/anticoag signs you could watch for.

--

There are also case reports of liver injury arising with the newer high activity curcumin formulas. Rare but increasing recently.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK5...

"Recently, isolated case reports of liver injury arising during use of turmeric dietary supplements have been published...The clinical features of the liver injury attributed to high bioavailable forms of curcumin have recently become better defined. The latency to onset of liver injury has varied from a few weeks to as long as eight months but is typically 1 to 4 months. The onset is insidious with fatigue, nausea and poor appetite followed by dark urine and jaundice. Rash and fever are absent or mild. Laboratory tests at onset typically show marked elevations in serum aminotransferase (ALT) levels (often above 1000 U/L) with only mild increases in alkaline phosphatase"

They say it's reversible if stopped upon the occurrence.

So you'd want to coordinate with Dr and keep up with your CMP blood tests.

But we see here in various prior posts that it can help well with joint pain, so the risk/benefit is a trade off.

The more traditional tumeric formulas are less implicated.

Thank you for the interesting reply, maybe I will continue using TENS machine as seems to help, also had a couple of deep tissue massages with osteopath. Thanks again.

I have been taking turneric/curcumin for years along with aspirin. While there is a caution about the potential for potentiation of the aspirin (bleeding risk) it has never been a problem for me. The anti-inflammatory benefit of the curcumin far outweighs the potential risks. Curcumin works gar better than any prescription NSAID that I have been prescribed and has lower risk than the NSAIDs.

As with all of our treatment decisions, we have to weigh the risks vs the benefits. My experience with curcumin has. Even very positive in terms of benefits with no noticeable adverse effects.

I strongly suggest reviewing the use of complimentary health interventions with an Integrative or Functional medicine doctor. These providers are more knowledgeable and can give the expert consultation needed to mKe good decisions.

I took it for a while but had huge bruises with the slightest knock. Clinic advised I stopped. Others swear by it.

My husband has PV,but before his diagnosis 12mths ago, he was taking Turmeric. I mentioned this to our (wonderful!)head Pharmacist (we were talking about Turmeric benefits as I am also taking it). She was adamant this should never be taken with asprin,he obviously stopped taking it. Turmeric isn't for pain relief, although it may help. I'm sure you will find another option

Thank you, hopefully it will improve as we have enough to contend with having an mpn. Best wishes. JUDE

Hello, hope you are doing well. I have PV and also suffering from lower right back pain with disc bulge at L5-S1: I have been taking curcumin (500mg) from last 3 months along with Aspirin 75mg and Hydroxyurea. I haven’t had any issues so far with curcumin. My lower back pain is also relieved up to 70-80%. I have been also supplementing with Fish Oil 2gm and NAC 1800mg. So far so good. I would suggest you to check with your doctor about supplimenting with curcumin as every person is different in responding to these supplements. I started curcumin thrice a week and slowly started using it everyday. Hope this helped you. Please take care. Thank you.

I have PV and on Aspirin. Had joint pain and thought I'd try Glucosamine, Chrondontin and tumeric combination. Read they all can cause blood thinning. Spoke to my haematologist contact, who is also pharmacist. She said happy for me to try it on the understanding that if I got nose bleeds or other bleeds and bruises popping up unexpectedly, then to stop immediately. Fortunately, not had a problem. But I guise everyone is different and I'd always ask a medical professional.

Unfortunately I can't add anything to the excellent responses to your question. However, as a 77 year old active guy I feel like I have to mention the tremendous benefits to adding stretches to your daily regimen. I do a few back stretches on the floor before I start my day and a few more when I get back from walking my dog. I push myself and occasionally wind up with a sore back but it's rare that I need anything more than a heating pad and more stretching. Lots of good examples on the net. Good luck and I hope you resolve this soon as you're still a youngster in my book. ☺️

That's great, my hubbie keeps saying about the stretching, I have been doing some that the physio recommended, as you say can be a bit sore after, so you worry you are doing too much, I'll keep going! Thank you. Youngster, I wish lol

hi! When I take turmeric, I reduce my aspirin a bit. It’s different for everybody. A good trick is to floss strongly and see if your gums bleed and they continue too long. Then your blood is too thin. The turmeric is out of the body latest in 12 hours, like ginkgo. Aspirin stays up to a week.

If your liver is not good, please no turmeric until the readings look better. It’s good for us MPNsnto do liver cleansing and support regularly. 🙂

Before I started taking tumeric, I asked both my GP and my MPN specialist - they both thought that it would be fine with the amount of aspirin I am taking and the benefits might be very good. Can say that inflammation as a whole seems to have somewhat reduced but honestly do not know if that's the tumeric/cucurmin or the intensive stretching I started to do (pilates/yoga) - I have not had any issues with bruising but we are all different.

Hi there. I take turmeric honey most days, I add it to hot water but it can be added to hot milk too. I’m on aspirin and hydroxy and interferon and it hasn’t caused any problems. Mel x
