I have been amazed at the effect taking turmeric has had on the amount of pain I experience in my hands and how quickly this has happened. (Yes, I know about the placebo effect!)
I would recommend anyone to try it (providing they check with their haems/doctors first). I take 2 capsules of turmeric extract complex purchased from the internet. It contains: Vit D3, Vit C, Turmeric extract (95% curcuminoids)and Black Pepper. Not cheap but for me worth it. Sallie

Hi, I take HU and Turmeric, have for several years, my MPN specialist is ok with taking both, I am wondering why you were advised to not take them together, I have not heard that before. Thanks and best to you all.
I was on Anagrelide and was careful only to take the turmeric at least 3 1/2 hours after my tablet, because turmeric would knock out the medication. Anagrelide only works in the body for about 3 1/2 hours. Turmeric longer.
fear of the turmeric detox in your medication would probably be the reason why your doctor said no. It’s so important to ask why? for every single detail. Then we learn to be a team with our doctors, working for our bodies together. 😁
I just found the half-life of Anagrelide is one hour and 20 minutes so I calculated the time it needs to clear out of my body. The half-life of HU is very important to know if you’re taking any antioxidants.
I just typed in Hydroxyurea and half life and Internet and immediately got 100 responses that HU has a half-life of between two and four hours. If you take the maximum of four hours, 3/4 of the HU have been already used after 8 hours. If you take the minimum of two hours, 3/4 of the HU are gone after four hours. 7/8 are gone after six hours.
I also use turmeric/curcumin as originally recommended by my rheumatologist for osteoarthritis pain in my hands. It is a more effective anti-inflammatory agent than any NSAID I ever used. Glad to hear that you also have found it helpful.
Do you know if there is any affect on platelets? I'm post stem cell transplant and mustn't take anything like ibuprofen or aspirin that can mess up my recovering blood counts
I have never seen evidence that Curcumin has any impact on platelet levels. While is purported to be mildly blood thinning, I have not observed that effect.
Can I ask you what dose you take, I too am trying to keep arthritis at bay with various supplements possibly with some success, there’s room for improvement though
Thanks for that info, I take about half that dose, I was concerned about increasing the risk of bleeding with too high a dose but presumably you okd it with your Haem?
I take alphacircumin plus by ReallybHealthy in the UK, it’s tricky to compare exactly as they all use slightly different formulations and allegedly bioavailability’s, what is striking is the difference in price , yours is $15, mine is £29 which is approx $35, the US is so much cheaper for summplements.
It is hard to compare different formulations. I let my hematologist know about the curcumin, but take my guidance from my Integrative Medicine doc who knows more about complementary health interventions.
Quality supplements usually cost the same or more in the USA. I just got lucky and found a cheaper than usual source for the curcumin.
Tumeric has been great for my husband. His headaches stopped. He also takes organic turkey mushroom tail. Great for strengthening immune system, reducing inflammation. Researches have been done that it helps with cancers too.
Turmeric is excellent! It thins the blood, so be careful if you’re on aspirin, but two capsules should not be a problem. It is important to take good supplements, and they are naturally more expensive, but are worth it.
One warning is that if your liver is not OK, turmeric can be problematic.
I take a fabulous turmeric from Mount natural, premium Curcuma mit Piperin, Certified organic, free of aluminum, etc. It’s a German company and it also has curcumin in it, which makes it even more intensive. I buy it in large amounts of 270 capsules per little bag. In the end, it’s much cheaper buying in bulk. My husband takes it also. He and my brother-in-law also swear by it. We live in Austria.
when I have back or knee pain or a rare headache, I take a whole teaspoon of organic turmeric simmer it for five minutes in some rice milk (I don’t eat dairy products) adding some pepper, a little bit of oil, and a bit of honey in the end. This is very intensive much more than two capsules more like 5-6. The pain in 10 minutes. If the pain is less, I take less.
Turmeric must be taken with some fat or oil, because it is then taken up by the gut. Without fats it goes straight to the large intestine. If it’s taken for colon cancer, then best taken without any fats. Also better to be taken with food. It’s easier on the stomach.
Like any medicine powerful enough to have major benefits, turmeric may have side effects as well. The Washington Post reports today on possible liver damage from turmeric. washingtonpost.com/wellness... I imagine there is some way to monitor liver function to minimize the risk if you are self prescribing turmeric. There are some free rides but there aren’t very many.
Good info, their point is a rare event but with much larger numbers now using hi test curcumin cases are rising. They suggest Curcumin is one large reason for rising lever injury cases. I can attest to really bad rare outcomes.
Most MPN pts get regular CMP blood tests that check liver function, this is a good reason to keep that up for those on curcumin, and esp if also on IFN where liver injury is a known, but avoidable, risk.
