Renal stenosis

Hi. I started Hydreasin two years ago one capsule a day. Last year it was found I had obstruction of ureteroreanal junction. out of the blue. I suffered much pain and in two days I am having surgery. I read somewhere that Hydroxy does that. Any idea about it? I am thinking of changing to Besremi as I have enlarged spleen and liver and I also have saturation. I need to see the haematologist.

Hydroxyurea can cause renal impairment but I have not heard of it causing renal stenosis, which is a narrowing of the renal arteries. Renal stenosis in the context of PV would be a significant risk and definitely needs to be addressed.

Discussing a change to Besremi or Jakafi in the situation you describe would be a very reasonable thing to consider. Hopefully, you are already consulting with a MPN Specialist who is experienced with all of the treatment options.

It is called obstruction of ureteroreanal junction.

That is different than the arterial renal stenosis. Hopefully the plan is for a laparoscopic surgery. I do not think this issue is related to the hydroxyurea.

Wishing you an uneventful surgery.

Yes laparoscopic robotic. If stones caused it could it be hydroxyurea? Did you have side effects with Besremi? Is this interferon? Thank you.

I do not think this kind of stenosis is cause by stones, but suggest you ask the urologist that question.

Besremi is a form of interferon, ropeginterferon alpha 2b. I have found it to be more effective and easier to tolerate than the other treatment options I have used. The side effects have been itching.occasional rashes that are well controlled with Zyrtec, elevation in LFTs that is well controlled with milk thistle extract, and mild lymphopenia/borderline neutropenia. The decrease in leukocytes is a dose-limiting factor for me. I am maxed out at 175mcg, which is a low dose. Fortunately, this doe works for me. I am pleased that my JAK2 allele burden has dropped from 38% to 10%. I feel better now than I did before starting on the interferons. In fact, I feel better now than I did 10 years ago.

Hope the surgery goes well.

Thank you. I hope the fact that I have hypothyroidism will not prevent me getting it.
