Medical exemption certificate

Hi just a question for folks in the UK . I'm under 60 and wondering if I am entitled to a medical exemption certificate for my prescriptions ? I receive my hydroxycarbamide free from the hospital pharmacy , but have to pay for a prescription for my blood pressure tablets and asthma inhalers prescribed by my GP.

I know certain medical conditions qualify you for all free prescriptions.

What are other folks experiences in this area ?

With thanks 😊

Yes - you can get an exemption form as you have a type of blood cancer. It needs signing by your GP or another doctor who is treating you. I got mine until I was 60. More details here: macmillan.org.uk/cancer-inf....

Yeah this. I’m 43 and diagnosed since November. Took a few weeks to get the exemption (after going via my GP for the form) but you’re definitely entitled to it. Good luck.

H there, I'm aged 59 in the UK with pv and am on hydroxy, I asked my doctors reception for the medical exception form and just ticked the cancer option, the doctor then signs this and sends them off, like you I'm on other meds which I now get free

Once signed by the GP tell the pharmacy and you should get prescriptions free

Hi Catbells66 ,

I am in the UK and just turned 60 so exempt now, but my GP had said I would be eligible. As others have shared, you will need a form form from your GP and there are parts for you both to complete/ sign.

If you are on any of the medication prescribed by your haematologist then you will qualify but as stated above, check the link from Mazd to get a form and take to GP, good luck

That even includes aspirin. I started buying it myself as that was cheaper than prescription charges. Fortunately I read guidance on here

yes I was buying my aspirin at first too but it was questioned by the hospital and that’s when they said it has to be put on the repeat script so that GPs are aware of the medication you take…

Hi, I was diagnosed when I was 49 and asked my gp for a medical exemption card and the receptionist organised it 😊

I had to argue with my GP, but eventually managed to get mine signed..as it is a form of blood cancer and taking the chemo drug ( HU)
