Are prescriptions FREE is you have been diagnosed with PV?

Hi,

Does anyone claim FREE prescriptions since they have been diagnosed with PV in the UK? My husband takes a medley of tablets, however not entirely sure the symptoms he has and taking the tablets for are directly related to his PV.

Thanks in advance.

If you have a PV diagnosis you can get free prescriptions on anything prescribed, not just the drugs for PV. You need to complete form FP92A from your GP or haematologist.

Best regards

I know I’m quite annoyed really, that he was given a label and just sent off to get on with it.. No advice on anything that could make things easier, a leaflet would of been good explaining about Free prescriptions and claiming Critical Illness if you have the cover. .... We just found out about all this incidentally. I really appreciate this forum and peoples’ feedback.

Yes I agree upon delivery diagnosis you should be given information to all this .

I agree, I paid for over 12 months before I found out from this forum. My GP didn’t know anything about it but agreed to complete the form, making a note on it that I had PV, NOT cancer! She was most surprised when I saw her two weeks later and said my exemption card had come through. Over 60 now so don’t pay anyway.

Yes any MPN means you can get a medical exemption card for free NHS meds - get the form from GP and fill in and either GP or consultant needs to sign it.

Thanks so much for your reply.

My husband had PV now MF he gets free perscriptions. You have to get a form from your doctor's and send it off.

Hi, I have ET, I was told to apply for an nhs exemption certificate as it was classed as a blood cancer. All my medications are now free. You get the form from your gp

I’m over 60 so I’m except anyway . If you’ve got an MPN you get free prescriptions. I think you get an exemption form from the chemist. Keep all receipts whilst it’s being processed you can claim a refund I think.

Good luck

My consultant writes a prescription for my hydroxycarbamide tablets and I was never asked asked to pay for them prior to being eligible to free prescriptions.

You can only get the exemption card if you are receiving treatment for your MPN and it’s prescribed, if your only on aspirin you don’t qualify. My haemo changed my meds recently to clopidogral and signed the medical exemption form!

Ahhh right I thought it was down to your diagnosis not that it mattered what you were taking???

Hi just to let you know that the exemption card is if you have been diagnosed and nothing to do with any prescriptions you get, as someone else mentioned on my post. Hubby received his card today.
