HU and Osteoblasts

Hi Group,

I have ET Jak2 + and am 64yrs old

My bone mass has been declining faster than I would have expected given my level of activity, genetic history and diet. I have seen some information that HU affects the production of osteoblasts as well. My info is from a quick read of Hydroxyurea Induces Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Sromal Cells Senescence and Modifies Cell Functionality in Vitro (PubMed Central from the National Library of Medicine). My scientific vocabulary and reading skills are not where I'd like them to be, so I may be misreading the information.

Has anyone else heard about this or know anything more? I'd like to see if there is any validity to this before talking to my Hematologist.

Hi, I am 65 years old, have ET and take hydroxy. As I already have low bone density (osteopenia) I asked about the effects of hydroxy on my bones, I have had three different answers. One from a MPN specialist who said 'yes and not in a good way' another from a haematologist who said 'no effect' and different MPN specialist who said I have not heard of that being a side effect'. So, I have always had a active life, good diet but being a small petite female makes my bones less dense than the general population. I decided not start digging into all of the research on this subject otherwise life would just be one big worry. It will be interesting to learn what others on this forum have discovered relating to bone mass . Best wishes.

Thanks, It is interesting what a wide range of responses you received. I am not a small woman and have been physically active so this result is very disappointing for me. I have read that people taking algaecal with strontium have had good results, even up to remineralization of the bones. Research does indicate that strontium has a beneficial affect, but dosage is important. Don't know if I want to try it or not.
