I have unfortunately developed a urinary tract infection. I am penicillin-sensitive and have been prescribed trimethoprim as a seven day course. I have been reading up on it and see that it should not be prescribed for patients with "blood dyscrasias" because of some interaction with folate.
Does anyone here know if it is satisfactory for me to use as I have ET?
My GP seems to know nothing about ET and chooses to ignore it completely when dealing with me!
Thank you

Thank you for contacting me. I was actually between two hospitals and no longer had a haem nurse from the first one, but this has now been corrected. I contacted the MPN team and they OKd taking the drug if it was only for a week.
I am managing with it at present so fingers crossed😃
It is common for GPs to be unfamiliar with special treatment needs for patients with MPNs. This is a question for your MPN Specialist. You could also check with a pharmacist, who may be would likely to know as well.
The warning you are seeing is likely related to this contraindication.
Contraindications for Trimethoprim Trimethoprim (trimethoprim (trimethoprim tablet) tablet) tablets are contraindicated in individuals hypersensitive to trimethoprim (trimethoprim (trimethoprim tablet) tablet) and in those with documented megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency. rxlist.com/trimethoprim-dru...
I expect the Trimethoprim is OK with ET; however best to check this out with an MPN knowledgeable medical professional.
Thank you Hunter for your detailed reply. I did not get help from my pharmacist so I did indeed contact MPN team. I was told if it was only for seven days I could try it and they also decided I should continue my HU daily as well. I am on day 2 and no bad side effects - so all good.
In the Trimeth. printout it suggested that patients with "blood dyscrasias" and particularly with "suppressed bone marrow" should be aware.
Again thanks for the prompt reply with all the information and good wishes to you
hi Jelbea, sorry to hear that you have a UTI, not nice for you. You could ask your pharmacist for advice about any contraindications/interactions. I hope it clears up soon. Best wishes, Maz
Thank you very much for your advice. I could not get help from my pharmacist so I contacted my haem team. I was told if the drug was just for seven days I could take it. I am on my second day and thankfully not experiencing any bad side effects.
hi before I was diagnosed I had my bladder made larger due to utis constantly and they gave me that med but I could not tolerate it a few months later I was diagnosed with ET and I take every night 1 antibiotics for a minute nth and n xx month a different antibiotic once a night
