MPN and secondary cancer

Hi Everyone,

Diagnosed ET Nov 2023, currently taking daily aspirin and Hydroxy 500mg. I also have Hashimoto’s.

Recently discovered lump in my breast, now have referral to hospital for further investigation. Fingers crossed it is a benign cyst. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced secondary cancer to their MPN?

Hi Vladimir1, I’m sorry to hear about your breast lump, that sounds worrying for you but as you say hopefully it’ll be a cyst /benign lump. I too found a lump 3 years ago and saw someone about it (twice), was told it was a cyst. Fingers crossed for you, please keep in touch and let us know how you’re doing with it. Hope you’ll be seen quickly. X

Hi Vladimir1, yes, I have MF and discovered a tiny lump in my left breast last Summer…it turned out to be Inasive Ductal Carcinoma Stage 2. Luckily I found it early and it hadn’t spread…now still recovering after having radiotherapy in December. Good luck, I hope your is benign.

Hello Vladimir1, this might be too technical, but if it helps put your mind at rest, a breast lump will not be a secondary cancer from your MPN. An MPN is classed as a cancer because too many blood cells are made, but the extra cells are normal, and not cancerous themselves, so they won't spread and make a secondary cancer elsewhere in the body. There is a very low frequency of progression to leukaemia, way down the line, but not of solid tumours. So whatever this lump is, it is separate from the MPN.

This is a worrying time, good luck, and remember most lumps are benign. I do hope that this is the case for you.

Hi Leveret20, thanks for sharing your knowledge. You couldn’t have explained this better. I am very new to this MPN journey and have much to understand and learn. Fingers crossed.

Yes, I was diagnosed with MDS/MPN about four years ago and was told at the time that this cancer with a small c does not spread, so you won't get secondaries. I've got too few red cells and too many platelets, though I really dont see what all the fuss is about because my platelets are only just outside the range!

Hi VladimirI have PV and was diagnosed with low grade lymphoma following a BMB. Both conditions are managed by the hematologist I'm on watch and wait for the lymphoma and aspirin and venasection for the PV. I recently found a lump in my breast and had 2 mammograms and luckily it was nothing sinister. Try not to worry although I know from experience that's not easy. Take care and remember as said in another reply most lumps are benign ,good luck.🤞

Hi Camelian, thank you for your reply and well wishes. It is hard not to worry, however I feel I am managing this well, by staying busy and not living inside my head. What ever the result, I can deal with that when I know.
