Hi Bonnie:
I've had two rounds of breast cancer -- one in 2013 (treatment included surgery, chemo and radiation) and the second in 2016 (surgery only). I was diagnosed with ET in 2017. It's been quite a ride

Breast cancer in 2014 - op and radiotherapy - diagnosed ET 2017, although I can see that platelets were raised in 2014.
Hi Bonnie,
I had a malignant melanoma, just before ET diagnosis, since removed and treated successfully 5 year ago, platelets have come down to below 450. I even asked my consultant if I definitely had ET, she said yes as they had tested and I am jak2+ on aspirin only.
Tigger, what kind of treatment did you receive for the malignant melanoma?
BonnieJ
Hi Bonnie
Like Trigger , I too had a malignant melanoma 5 years ago. It was caught early and after they had done wide margins everything was clear . They did follow me up for 3 years - I had 3 monthly check up apts and have been fine .
Keep well everyone !

Hi Bonnie,
Not an exact answer to your question but I've also had breast cancer twice. Both required surgery, the first in 2009 also required chemo. The most recent was April 2018.
I have had Jak 2 ET since 2006 and take aspirin, hydroxycarbamide and tamoxifen (for breast cancer).
I've asked a similar question in the past & it seems there are several people with more than one cancer.
Best wishes

Hi Bonnie
Interesting question. I had a basal cell skin cancer on my chest and a squamous cell skin cancer on my leg: both before the myelofibrosis was diagnosed. At the time of the MPN diagnosis by the local haematologist he found that I also had CLL( chronic lymphosomething leukaemia). Low level, nothing in itself to worry about, but it does exclude me from most clinical trials. Which is a pity.
Regards
Rachel
I had bowel cancer 6 1/2 years ago I’ve been diagnosed 2 1/2 years ago with over jak2. And I think they are definitely related when I look back after my op for results I was walking around with hct of 50
I had breast cancer in 2009 and had a right side mastectomy and then had a risk reduction mastectomy in 2010 because of the strong family history of breast cancer. I was then diagnosed with PV in 2013. I wonder if there has been a study regarding this?
Hi, Sorry to many of you have had to deal with other cancers.
I've had no other cancers prior to PV.
Sorry not me x
I think the experts found that having a mutated gene increases the chance of more mutations.
I had breast cancer in 2009, treatment included surgery twice and radiotherapy. Diagnosed with PV Jak2 positive in 2017. I have often wondered if there is any connection.

I have been on hydroxy & aspirin for ET for 5 yrs. Platelets at 460 now. I have had many skin cancers. My skin dr. advises I should have my dosage cut but hemo says no. I guess it's between a rock and a hard place. I have see dermatolo
gist every 3 months but still have cancer spots. What's a person to do?
This is a wonderful forum. Thank you
Hello to all! I too had breast cancer in 1998 followed with surgery, chemo and radiation. Some of your responses make me wonder if the treatment for one cancer can cause a gene mutation for another.
In other words, can certain chemo drugs , let’s say for breast cancer, cause a gene mutation for MPN?
Or people who’ve had a lot of X-rays in their lifetime, or had radiation therapy for cancer treatment, or even had a job that exposed them to radiation—are they more likely to have a gene mutation for MPN?
I read that if you have an MPN gene mutation your are at higher risk for other types of gene mutations. But what about the reverse—if you have some other gene mutation (BRCA 1 or BRCA2, for example), it looks like your have a really good chance of being diagnosed with an MPN disorder eventually.

Hi. In 2011 I was diagnosed with such early stage ovarian it did not need chemo or radiation. In 2013 I was diagnosed with ET jak+ & began HU 6-12 months later. Given your question about correlation between earlier cancer treatments and an MPN I think you need to ask that specific question. I’m surprised at how many of us have had other earlier cancers. That’s a good question & something the docs should add to their surveys. Katie
Yes, diagnosed with bladder cancer 2014 and a few months afterwards with ET....always wondered about association. Best regards, Tinkerbell
Hi there, not me thankfully. Sorry for the rest of you though xxx
Hi Bonnie, can I ask you why you are asking this question and what your intentions are regarding the replies? Maz
Hi Max, I thought this was a site where people could ask questions!
As stated, I was just curious about people having other cancers as well, as I have noticed that a lot of folks on this site seem to have had this.
I had been a nurse for many years and have always had a natural curiosity of how the human body works, how it heals itself, how nutrition and environment factor impact our health, etc. I like to think that curiosity made me a better nurse
I like to read up on the latest medical breakthroughs, I am interested in how healthcare is dealt with in different countries, for example, I live here in the USA and wish we had national healthcare like the Brits. Medical cost here are quite expensive, and so is health insurance. Many have no insurance at all because they can’t afford it, they just hope they don’t get sick.
I see all kinds of questions on the site, I think it’s good to ask questions that piques people’s interest, food for thought.
We all share a bond, so to speak, with this diseas process. We should support each other, share experiences, seek knowledge.
Isn’t that what this site is about?
Best Wishes,
BonnieJ
Hi Bonniej, yes this is a forum where people can ask questions, but as the administrator I have to be very aware of protecting the people who use the forum, and we have had very unscrupulous people joining the group just to elicit information to use for their own purposes, i.e. they work for a pharmaceutical company, or they sell 'natural supplements that cure all illnesses', and they then use the information to target people, this would be the type of information gathering that is not in the best interests of anyone using this forum.
There are many other groups who use HealthUnlocked to offer support etc, just as we do, and I very often receive a warning from other admins about people who are joining their groups just to gather information just to target people for their own gain, and this can and has caused distress to very vulnerable people in the past.
I am sorry if I caused you any offence in asking you why you wanted the information, but I hope you can understand my caution. It was merely to ensure the protection of people using this forum. Best wishes, Maz
