I have PV had ET which progressed to PV. I was doing ok and I do see an MPN Specialist. About a week ago my foot was red and swollen right across where all my toes are and hurt. It swells up if I'm on it and it is very painful to walk. I'm starting to think Gout. I do not eat rich foods but I did have Shrimp right before this happened. Can anyone share there experience with Gout, it is not my Big toe it is more an area straight across my foot right about my toes. Painful to walk and bend my foot. At the moment I am not on medicine only aspirin. Thanks

Gout and MPN
It certainly sounds like Gout to me but I would see a Gp to confirm it. You have my sympathy, my Brother had it when he was younger and he could tolerate pain but that took its toll. I've also seen a friends son with it ( a big burly lad) nearly crying with it. By the way thats a little bit of a myth about rich foods and port causing it, its actually a build up of uric acid in the blood and a simple blood test will tell your Gp if its that. Tina.🤗
Hi mickey , , I've experienced gout several times over the last 15 years, in fact it was the main thing that kicked off my MF diagnosis . My bouts of it have been confined to my big toe joints where as Tina says the excess uric acid crystallises in the joint leaving it angry and swollen. Oh and ruddy painful 😨.
Early on I was prescribed 300mg Allopurinol daily which is a preventative. It doesn't need to be in the joint and yours sounds like it very likely is gout but again as Tina suggests your GP will confirm or your Haematologist by looking and it will likely show in your blood result.
I don't know if the shrimps would be enough to trigger it on their own it may linked to your PV.
When mine was at its worst I couldn't bear a cotton sheet on it so put a pillow down the bed and shielded my foot best I could.
It takes a while to ease up on its own.
Regards - Chris
Hi I had gout a few years ago in my left foot I couldn't handle work has I was in such much pain I kept putting ice packs on my foot and I did foot excrises it took a few weeks but I got there in end I still get a few pains ever now and again but not has bad has I first had gout a few years ago but it does gets better in time.xxx
So true Chris. I remember my brother couldn't bear a sheet over him. He had it in his ankle and was misdiagnosed twice at the Hospital.1st time told him he had a sprained ankle, 2nd time told him he could have a minor crack in it and plastered it! He was in so much pain when he got home he took a carvery knife to it and cut it off! Luckily the 3rd time he went, a young German female Doctor did a simple blood test to diagnosis it. Mind you that was nearly 30 years ago and were probably shocked that a skinny 20 year could suffer with gout. Times have moved on and it would be picked up sooner these days, I hope. Hope your keeping well Chris. Tina.🤗
I have had four serious attacks in recent months. My attacks often start in the left foot, mostly outside the ankle, but also across the top of the foot. However, the last two serious attacks have been in the right knee. I have had low blood uric acid but high in the affected joint. The last attack forced me to call an ambulance as the pain was unbearable. Lengout and conventional pain relief just did not touch it. I am very careful with my diet and try not to eat too many purine-rich proteins.
Gout is unfortunately a common symptom of mpn due to the uric acid produced by cells breaking down. Hubby takes cherry concentrate which neutralises the acid. It really does work & is a known natural remedy. Check that you do have gout & then give it a whirl. Hubby notices it if he runs out & has a week without taking it, pain & swelling comes back.
Hi mickey64 -my haematologist has put me on alloporinol to prevent gout>I think it may be a possible side effect of taking Hydroxycarbamide.
Hi mickey64 - I agree with other comments - maybe your doc could start you on Allopurinol after this flare of possible gout.I think the Hydroxycarbamide may have caused this.Good luck!!
Thank you all for your replies, what have people taken during gout flareups and any suggestions on the pain? Cold packs?? etc. Thank you again!
Hi I just made like ice packs put in freezer put over the effective area for a few mins ever so often in the day then a circle foot movements and to also to elevate your foot high when relaxing i used a few big cushions every night for about 20 mins and every so often I took paracetamols for the pain but did take a,few weeks hope this helps xxx
I think you need to speak to a GP. If it is gout I Understand that it’s really painful. Good luck
