so hard to manage when you have a baby at the best of times .

Please don’t Google randomly. It’s useful when looking up stuff on good sites but can’t do more harm if not ( to your head)

This is the best place to pour out your feelings and ask questions..

How long have you been depressed . I’m wondering if any connection with having baby? Also are you being properly treated for it?

Has GP suggested the need to investigate why platelets are high? Ask what tests they are doing next .

I’ve had depression since I was 15 years old I’m 37 now I’ve had high platelets on and off since 2021 but always gone back to normal they said they not worried at the moment but if they go up higher I’ll have more tests I did have a nasty chest infection a week before my bloods and I finished my antibiotics like on the Monday early hours and had bloods done on the Wednesday

Sorry to hear about the struggles. That is a lot to have on your plate.

Chronic depression and anxiety can be difficult to manage, but can be treated successfully. The sleep disturbance is also something that needs to be addressed as part of a comprehensive plan. The combination of counseling (e.g., Cognitive Behavior Therapy) and medication when appropriate can make a world of difference.

Thrombocytosis can be either primary (essential) or secondary (reactive). One of the causes of secondary thrombocytosis is iron deficiency. Other causes of reactive thombocytosis include inflammation, injury and illness. What you are describing could be consistent with a case of reactive thrombocytosis. Note that the workup for Essential Thrombocythemia is a process of elimination for secondary causes and would include a MPN myeloid panel, testing for the three driver mutations (JAK2, CALR, MPL).

Here is a bit about the workup for Secondary Thrombocytosis. emedicine.medscape.com/arti...

Suggest that waiting 6 weeks for repeat blood work is a reasonable timeframe given how you are presenting. You may wish to consult with your care team about ordering a complete evaluation as recommended in the referenced article. Dealing with the anxiety in the meantime is the most important goal. That should not wait for 6 weeks.

Please do reach out here on the forum. There is a lot of support available from people who understand the stress of not knowing whether you have a MPN.

Wishing you success moving forward. Please do let us know how you get on.

I understand fully. I have anxiety about my ET and all the unknowns but it’s important to try and manage that as best you can. I’m sure your young one keeps you busy and distracted.

Remember that usually people with issues post on the internet, people who are doing well often don’t. So apart from reading scientific papers you’re probably well advised to keep away from internet forums - except this one of course.

I am sure you feel very anxious, but there are many of us that also started with the alarming news platelets on the rise! Please do make sure your GP refers you to haematology, as likewise my GP was not at all sure of why this was happening. Once you are referred, haemo as usually excellent and will sort out what your system is up to! Please feel welcome to message and let us know how everything goes.I hope too you can have help with your anxiety as that is so hard and frightening for you .Take much care.

hello Welshgirl, I’m really sorry to hear that you are having such a difficult time at the moment. I understand the difficulties of trying to balance small children, sleepless nights and health worries. It is a lot and can feel overwhelming. Firstly, your platelets are not particularly high, and a “watch & wait” 6 weekly check is a good thing. There is no panic from your doctors, and it sounds as though your chest infection may have pushed platelets up. So, docs are waiting for infection to clear before testing blood again. From what you write your anxiety and depression have been with you for a long time. As others have said in their replies this is something that you need help with at this difficult time - both can cause a huge amount of exhaustion and other symptoms as well. Do you have help that you can tap into for these? BACP website will give you a list of all counsellors/psychotherapists in your area. They will be private but many will offer a sliding scale for people who may not be able to pay full amount. (I only mention this as a handy tip, I worked for years as a private counsellor and always saw one client for free - not many people know that this is often offered, it’s definitely worth asking). Do you do any yoga/meditation/breathing exercises? They can be really helpful to slow the brain down and clear the anxious/repetitive thoughts. Please feel free to contact me directly for a chat if you want to. Keep in touch with us here and take every day as it comes. X

It won’t matter how much I ask they won’t do the bloods sooner I hate having health anxiety there was no action required on my bloods in August and they done loads crp twice in 2 weeks said normal my platelets were 492 then but my ferritin was very low at 13. So don’t know if that caused that also I only finished my antibiotics a few days before my bloods xx

Hi Welshgirl, I experience debilitating anxiety over my health. SSRI medication really helps me cope. Meditation, diet and exercise also helps. Please seek options with your GP - you don't have to live with these feelings! As for your platelets, they are not that high and could be from your infection or a other secondary cause. Keep getting them checked and know that it is the trend to look at, not a few data points. Best of luck to you!

Have u ever had high platelets like that I did see the doctor a week before my bloods and he put me on antibiotics for a bacterial chest infection I had wheezing on my lung but I finished my antibiotics a few days before my bloods xx

marlenablue in reply toWelshgirlxx

I had high platelets from 1999 - 2016; at their highest, they were in the 900s. In 2010, my hemoglobin and red blood cells started to rise above normal, causing me a visit to a hematologist and eventually leading me to a diagnosis of PV. But until 2010, no one was concerned about my high platelets! I always was but never enough to do anything on my own. My platelets are now in the normal range but my other counts are higher than normal. I know it is scary but try to relax and wait for your follow up.

They said they not worried and it could been down to a chest infection I did have as only finished antibiotics few days before bloods what is pv they said my red bloods cells are 4.15 I think and my white bloods cells are 10.4 and they said that normal x

I have PV and all of my stuff started about 6 mos after having my daughter. I look back and everything we explained away can now be explained. I think the stress of having a baby does something not only to our bodies but our mental state. You now have this child that you are their everything. And for me she is my one and only. She never slept! It was very stressful and I had help from my husband and parents. But I was exhausted. I had completely normal labs and had labs 4mos after having her that were normal. Somewhere something switched. And I think my stress and anxiety made it worse. We were building our house at the time too. All wonderful things but all stressful things. I wish back then I would have got help for my anxiety. Who knows maybe it would have changed my trajectory. And when I finally figured out what I had and now have an additional diagnosis it has changed me. I try not to stress, which is laughable at times! But it changed my life. I have taken my medical decisions in my own hands. I am going on vacations, working, being a mom and a wife, I feel great. God has given me this cross to bear and I am going to try everyday to do better. I am blessed, my daughter is 5 and healthy. My miracle. I pray she does something great in this world. You may not even have anything wrong. Try not to worry. Try to focus on the good in your life. As my family tells me all this time you spend worrying you are missing it! Take the time between appointments to enjoy not thinking about it. It is hard, I torture my husband with my rationalizing everything, but everyday I try to do better. Lots of love and support. You can always vent to me!!! It will be ok. Love your little one and know we are all here for you. And google is a horrible place at times! Try to avoid that rabbit hole! But hopefully yours will normalize, but know if they don’t you will be ok. I am 41, diagnosed at 38. It will be ok. I think that is all I ever wanted to hear after being diagnosed. I hope you feel better. ❤️

Sorry! Polycythemia Vera. Different than thrombocytosis, but if you have ET they can be in the same family, so to speak. But hopefully yours normalize! I bet they will. 🙂

Hi Welshgirl,

I'm sorry to hear you are feelingn so low at the moment. I have an mpn and my platelets were high but now they're almost in range. I don't really have any symptoms but I am on watch and wait and aspirin. Your platelets are not very high, and some months ago you state that they were what I think of as really low, so they have probably risen as a response to your infection. I have a wheeze, and I saw the GP last week about something else. He listened to my chest but didn't comment on the wheeze. I think it's going on its own anyway; I've had it, with a cough for quite a while and I have a sniff of First Defence now and again, which is useful. You have only recently given birth; give yourself a chance. Why would you not be tired? Pregnancy can take a lot out of you and now you are having to be everything to another human being. Give yourself a chance. Look after your baby and rest. Do very little else and don't expect too much from yourself. You probably haven't got an MPN, but even if you have, it needn't be that much of a deal. If your platelets don't drop, you will get a blood test and just wait and stop worrying.

Welshgirlxx profile image
Welshgirlxx in reply toMaggieSylvie

What is mpn also I’ve had the fatigue for 2 years and I don’t eat well at all I eat constantly bad foods they were 492 when I had my bloods in last August and I had low ferritin then but when I had blood’s January the 3rd they were 557 but I had did finish my antibiotics a few days before my bloods mine was bacterial chest infection cause it got rid it xx

MaggieSylvie profile image
MaggieSylvie in reply toWelshgirlxx

Sorry. As you are on MPN Voice, I thought you would know what an MPN was and had maybe been diagnosed with one or was expecting that you might have the condition. You now say that you haven't been treating your body in a very healthful way, so that is probably why you are feeling the way you do. You can't catch an MPN or develop it by neglect. It is genetic.

Welshgirlxx in reply toMaggieSylvie

Oh I’m sorry I thought it was down to all health concerns not just mpn xx

Hi,

Sorry to hear how you are suffering right now. It is very good advice not to Google randomly, since many sites are not reputable. Are you aware of PPD(postpartum depression)? If you have a good GYN/OB, it would be advisable to check in with them. I have known several women in the past that had similar symptoms. This can be managed and you may find your mental health will improve. Good luck with all of it!
