Platlets have gone down

Hi, My platelets have been around 544, then 587 but then they went down at my last two appointments to 578 then 542. Each appointment 3 months apart. Is this how platelets normally go, up and down, or is this a sign of progression? I have ET and am Jak2+ diagnosed 1 year ago. Thanks B

Hi EmeraldA,

I think it is quite normal. At least for me the level can go up or down 50 points between consecutive measurements easily. So too early to draw any conclusions, need to wait for more measurements. Your situation seems stable to me.

Cheers,

Hey Brona... :-)

Sounds like you are fairly stable to me also...

Hope all's well otherwise in your world over there, and Happy St Pat's Day too ...

Best wishes

I also agree with the others. Your platelets are always going to fluctuate. Yours seem pretty stable.

That is very normal cycling. Platelets can vary by as much as 100K in a single day as a function of normal platelet activity. Your body is constantly responding to events like bleeding, inflammation, injury, or infection. My platelets always cycle by as much as 200K between different labs. I have been doing that for 30 years.

It is the trend over time that matter, not any single set of lab values. I was cycling between 500s - 700s for most of 30 years. Now cycling 700s-900. That is a trend line that does have significance. It is likely the result of chronic iron deficiency caused by the phlebotomies.

Hope that helps.

Thanks everyone for their insight. That helps alot. I know we discuss the bigger things. I suppose I just wanted to know what was "normal" when everyone is living their lives and platelets are going up and down a little bit. Since just before diagnosis they have been going up albeit only from high 400's to 500's so far. I suppose I'm watching out for any new trends that are happening after a prickly diagnosis process. Thanks again! What would I do without this place which is full of well informed people! :)
