could emails be answered by AI ?

I was up last night with someone who was unwell.

Sent an email to Professor Harrison at Guys St Thomas Hospital, not expecting response till next week .

At midnight got response , wrote back and got another …. With an emoji ( I think it unlikely she would send one OR be working at that time.

I’ll ring tommorow to find out if it was a proper person.

interested in your thoughts…..

I very much doubt it will be AI, there are a lot of ethical implications regarding the use of AI, particularly in highly regulated industries such as health care due to the confidentiality of the data and the implications of AI providing mis-information ..

whilst I’m aware of its use in data analysis and more controlled lab settings to support research within health.. ,, any use of AI for conversing directly with patients regarding their condition would require a very high bar of testing and approval of the AI model before it can be used… regulators are still playing catch up and scrabbling to define policies and guardrails for its broader usage…

More likely it was one of her team authorised to respond on her behalf.

Thanks for your thoughts Steve.Just astonished the response was in a couple of minutes from sending . And at weekend .......

So many things get rushed through lately without proper procedure in place ...........

I know so many doctors, who work on weekends at home or in hospital and do send emails and catch up on work even during the night time. It is best to ask. I would find it strange if a doctor would sent an emoji if there’s not a close relationship there. I’m finding thought that emojis are increasingly coming from people, so I don’t know well. Hm.

Hm indeed ... I agree.

Hi Mostew. I can say that when I was diagnosed with Merkel Cell Carcinoma my boyfriend contacted the top-most expert doctor in the country in the middle of the night on a Friday night and received a response almost immediately. He setup a plan even before I woke in the morning. I do believe there are doctors who are so passionate about their work and their patients that they will and do respond at all hours on all days.

I agree. My haematologist and nurse always respond on email. Not in the middle of the night, but usually by the next day!

That's a great result but, tbh, I would be concerned about receiving care from a doctor who was not taking time out and getting enough sleep.

Otterfield good point you make. Certainly want our doctors to be well rested.

Glad you got such a quick plan in place. And hope you are doing OK. Where are you living.

NHS does its best , but short staffed and struggling. I'm always impressed with the care and kindness shown by staff

Mostew if this question was directed at me, I am in the USA.

I imagine that was a real person. And very possibly Prof! Interesting world where we get to thinking that an immediate, emoji inclusive response from a top flight professional must be AI generated. :))

Mostew profile image
Mostew in reply toEbot

Even stranger (or just as ) to think people are on their computers working after midnight at weekend The new 'reality' will be partly A I . unfortunately.

Thank you. Obviously only me being suspicious !!!!

Sounds like Prof!

With bot in your username how can we be sure you’re not AI generated? 😜

You can’t. 🤣

I expect it was her if it was a proper response and not just an out of office one. Many Drs....and nurses... answer all their emails from home...GPs too...too busy looking after their patients in the daytime to do it 😊😊😊

I have also received an email reply from Prof Harrison late at night, so I also suspect it was her. She truly is one in a million and we are so lucky to have her. Hope your friend is okay.

AI?! I hope not! Prof Harrison is my consultant and she is consistently helpful and available…perhaps she is working/holidaying in Australia and so it was not midnight at all!! Keep the faith and stay strong 🥇💪

I remember writing an email to Dr Claire Harrison, only to get a delayed reply from her secretary to say that as my wife was in Wales she would only look at her case if referred by her hematologist. Which won't happen.

Yes a referral is needed. I asked my gp to write to Proff H. So same in Norfolk were I live .

I do not like what’s happening to the world with Internet banking and artificial intelligence ! In Austria, absolutely every single bank in my neighborhood has closed and I have to drive 10 minutes to be able to do a bank transfer. I refuse to do Internet banking, because one of my tenants works on catching hackers for a major international bank. My bank he said that they are working 24 seven to catch the hackers that are continuously coming dangerously close to absolutely raiding the bank. All those who have Internet accounts will be staring.

all these computers at the supermarkets for self check out, is ruining the shopping experience as well. So many people are losing their jobs in the banks and supermarkets, everywhere we’re computers are taking over literally tens of millions of jobs in Europe! What are those people going to do? At the same time we are getting less and less service and have to make an appointment a week in advance to speak to our bank person. People aren’t talking to each other anymore. Shops are closing because of online shopping. All this is leading to degeneration of our bodies are relationships and society in general.

my daughter was able to generate unbelievable poetry on any crazy theme one could imagine in any style going hundreds of years back in time. They are generating the voices of singers. How will leaders of the world be able to communicate with each other on the phone or even on their screened channels? We will never know who’s speaking to who, really! These are not theories they are reality. We are one step ahead of being chipped, and the young people are voting for it even. They want to add a chip to the inside of our wrist and we can move through the transportation systems freely without taking out a card for flashing or phone. Who knows what else they put on that chip? Religion background, history, sexual orientation, political party health. there will be no into it! I see us ending up like chickens in those little cages for laying eggs around the clock. 😑 it’s up to us and every single individual to make decisions for the future and try to impact the decisions of our politicians. 👍

Possibly AI but some experts work into the night, I note my expert at MDA would reply almost immediately, he explained he gets hundreds of emails a day and would get buried if he doesn’t deal with them quickly, I’m also very impressed how many of the experts, often the US ones are happy to give out e mail addresses to patients. I think that’s impressive considering how busy they are.
