Nerves ‘nicked’ during bmb

I’ve spoken to haematology this morning as I’ve been having such a lot of pain since my bmb last week. I’ve only got to try to turn over in bed and it’s like being poked with red hot needles! Anyway the nurse I spoke to said it sounded like nerves had been ‘caught’ when they did the procedure, followed by the words that will have been mentioned on the consent form you signed!

I’ve got constant lower back pain which spreads across my buttocks and down the back of my thighs (and with the size of my bum that’s a lot of pain!) A doctor is going to phone me tomorrow and I was advised to rest and keep taking the co-codamol.

They took 3 samples so maybe they nicked 3 nerves. It does explain the pain I’ve been having, doesn’t make it any better though! My last one was great, no problems whatsoever.

Hope I don’t need another anytime soon!

Wishing you steady improvement. Nerve damage from BMB is not something most of us realize.

But it can happen apparently:

Bone marrow biopsy (BMP) is considered to be a relatively safe procedure with a reported complication rate around 0.05–.08%[1,2] including ... nerve damage,..."

"We report a case of an 85-year-old patient, who presented to our department with a left buttock excruciating pain and the left sciatic nerve palsy, 8 weeks after BMP."

You have my sympathy, I'm suffering from an also rare nerve injury, from flu vaccine.

Yours could well be just a single nerve, as I've learned from my ongoing ordeal, the pain can go to many places from a single start.

Ouch! Hope you recover soon. I've also experienced this so know how painful it is... it didn't happen when I had a BMB, but during a Lumbar Puncture. I was given a 10 day prescription for Tramadol, which really helped. So it maybe a good idea to ask for stronger painkillers.

That sounds so grim Lizzie, I was lucky and had an easy BMB.

In the past I’ve had neuralgia- shooting nerve pains at the sides of my face, but not had them since I took homeopathic belladonna, could be a coincidence, but I imagine you’re prepared to try anything. Best wishes Jo

Do hope pain resolves soon : life with MPNs tough enough anyway .In UK they use the - knees to chest- foetal position curled up on yr side: I’ve seen that in other countries that’s considered sub optimum and you just lie on yr front Anyone had experience of that?

Going this morning for my second BMB. The first did not yield any results for diagnosis of MPN. I hope this technician will do a better job!

gabapeptin ( spelling ) I understand is given to people when they suffer after having a limb amputated. It’s also given to dogs when the scull is too small for the brain.( my dog had it)

I have no medical training/knowledge but maybe it’s worth googling.

Good luck. Back pain is horrid

I'm taking Gabapentin for my vaccine nerve injury. I take a small dose at night and it seems to help, although I'm asking Dr about side effects.

Dr said it's safe for liver/kidney.

my friend’s arm is agony due to covid vaccine. I’ve just passed this info on to here. Was yours a covid vaccine?

EPguy profile image

My Covid booster went ok, just felt feverish the next day. Problem was the flu shot. I deliberately got it a week later in the other side to know which did it.

I had misguided immune reaction leading to Brachial Neuritis. This starts as agony radiating from shoulder and usually is followed by weakness. The Gab pill is esp for the painful period. But it can have side effects I'm asking Dr about. Currently I have transitioned to severe malaise, I'm at risk of being housebound.

Another more common adverse event is a poorly placed needle, usually too high or deep. This leads to SIRVA, a shoulder injury where the needle misses the muscle. This includes limited and painful shoulder motions.

Hi just read in your message that you also had back spasms. I am suffering with that really badly at the moment and cannot find any resolution to the pain. I have tried the normal medications, osteo, compression belt etc, but the moment I start bending it spasms lower back right. Anything you found successful in treating it would be very welcomed.

unfortunately medicine did not work I would get stuck when walking There is a cream for pain it’s a prescription I cannot remember the name of it but it did help some and then when laying down placing a pillow underneath and hot and cold compress I still have the spasm but it has gone down a good bit but there was an actual ripple in my back how bad the spasm was I will get the name of it and post it tomorrow

I hope you are able to get a resolution to the pain soon. I had a BMB two years ago and thankfully never suffered many after effects, but can appreciate it must be painful and uncomfortable. Hope the GP can help with this.

Good that you've managed to keep a sense of humour through it all.

hi Lizzie!

Firstly, I’m so sorry for this. What a nuisance!

There’s a lot you can do. Pain killers are nasty on the liver, therefore some liver support like milk thistle is good to reverse damage. I was taking NSAIDs for a nerve injury in my neck two years ago. Never had such pain in my life. They almost destroyed my liver and I had to do a proper liver detox to get my markers back to normal.

You can take B vitamins to help heal the nerve and help with the pain so that you’re not only on chemicals. It’s best to always take natural vitamins and not just any vitamins that are usually useless. Terra Nova B Complex is a fantastic supplement company and completely natural vitamins. They cost a fortune here in Austria, but are affordable in the UK where they are produced.

Get well quickly! 🙂

Hope to have helped. Anag

I noted above, Gabapentin for nerve pain is generally ok on the liver/kidney compared to some alternatives, according to my neuro Dr.

I'm so sorry you are in so much pain. Hope your doctor will give you something to take away the pain until you are healed.
