Hello, can turmeric help with muscle, joint & bone pain in PMF? If so in what form & dosage? …. and any known contraindications?

Many thanks, Susie

You might find this NHS specialist site useful:

sps.nhs.uk/articles/conside...

It's also best to run any supplements you are taking or considering taking past your oncology pharmacist as they will be able, knowing all the prescribed drugs you are personally on, to advise about safety etc. I find them very knowledgeable.

as long as you are not taking blood thinners, I wish I could take it.

I find curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, to be very helpful in managing inflammation/osteoarthritis pain. It works better than any NSAID I ever took. It is also much safer than NSAIDs in terms of potential adverse effects.

Curcumin is not readily bioavailable. The formulation makes a big difference in efficacy. Some formulations use pipirine (black pepper extract) to enhance bioavailability. There are other viable formulations as well. My Integrative medicine doc recommends a formulation called CurcuWIN. It is found in several different brands.

Curcumin is biologically active so It can have side effects and interact with things. It may potentiate blood thinners. In my experience, this has not been an issue with low-dose aspirin as the effect if very mild/undetectable. Suggest consulting with a provider who is knowledgeable about supplement-drug interactions. Not all providers are familiar with curcumin. You might want to check with a pharmacist or an Integrative or Functional medicine doc. Always let your care team know about all supplements you take as well.

All the best.

Checking the relationships between cúrcuma and Interferon. My integrative doctor, my MPN nutricionist, my ... are against it because it interferes with Interferon like others things.

My MPN Specialist and Integrative Med doc are both fine with combining the interferons with curcumin. There is nothing noted in the interaction check between curcumin and either Besremi or Pegasys. There is also nothing in the literature I could find on there being an issue.

What is in the literature is a citation about curcumin mediating attenuation of pro-inflammatory interferon γ, one of the issues associated with psoriatic disease.

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/321...

Hard to say what the concern is. Perhaps the docs are making a leap from this natural form of interferon to the type of interferon found in Pegasys and Besremi. It would be interesting to hear what support there is in the literature for there being an issue with curcumin and Besremi/Pegasys. Please do let us know if the docs can refer to specific evidence in the literature on this topic. We can all be informed by what you learn.

According to my team and research in vitro and in vivo analysis of curcuma, coffee, alcohol, raspberries, have shown that it inhibits the cytochrome P450 family. It is due to detoxification of the liver. Besremi (or Interferons in general) attacks the liver and we need to have the P450 no inhibited. I dont know if it is claire for you. I have a slow metabolism and I need that the enzymas work properly in my body to support Besremi. For this reason, curcumin, etc dont help me. I hope it helps you.

I take NAC (n-acetylcysteine 1200mg/day) along with a smaller dose of curcumin. I find some small relief from the NAC. On liver it's possible that NAC is helpful with IFN since it is used in high doses for liver detox and some studies I think I've posted point to liver benefits. Are you aware of any concerns on NAC and P450?

Hunter has also discussed using NAC's active effective agent glutathione.

For us no direct glutathione is good, a precursor o NAC like Nicotinamide Riboside also Epson baths, vinager apple in the morning 30 minutes before breakfast, light fasting no too long for us, grounding, good food, etc, etc. Too much things.

Careful if you are taking some medications. Cúrcuma is incompatible with some.

Hi, For myself I swear by the beneficial benefits of Turmeric. I have been taking Terry Naturally CuraMed with superior absorption Curcumin 750mg......1 taken daily for years. This supplement has noticeably helped with the itching and I believe the inflammation. It's expensive but worth it for me and has been okayed by my hematologist. It's expensive but so worth it for me. I have PV Jak2 for 20 years, on no medication but 2 low dose aspirin taken daily. Hope this helps. Kerry

I take turmeric for slipped disc, knee and all kinds of pain. I don’t know about that sn PCR. I have ET. It does thin your blood so careful. When I use turmeric I reduce from 10mg aspirin to 50mg.

I take a full tsp of organic turmeric, (not heaping) and a dash of pepper (activates the turmeric) and simmer it in a cup if water, milk or milk substitute (rice drink, etc. When simmered 5 minutes I pour it in a mug and add some honey. It’s delicious, especially in the cold months. In summer, I drink it cold. It’s called golden milk.
