Ronapreve, Monupiravir, Sotrovimab, only for some - and only when infected?
This does not sound like protecting the immunocompromised - more like shutting the stable door for some and leaving it wide open for others.
(These new treatments are not approved in the UK forCML, CMML, MPNs (PV,
ET, myelofibrosis), MDS, LGLL, and other chronic blood cancers that do
not affect B cells (B lymphocytes) and ONLY on confirmation of a positive PCR test)
Please MPN Voice confirm that you are petitioning for these treatments as a preventative for the entire Blood Cancer cohort, and help us re-enter life and stop shielding....
There is another one especially of interest approved for before infection. But it's not approved yet in UK even as it's from a UK company:
<<Evusheld received Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) in the US in December 2021 for the pre-exposure prophylaxis (prevention) of COVID-19 in people with moderate to severe immune compromise due to a medical condition or immunosuppressive medications>>
Now that you mention it I remember this report BUT my comments still hold as it is likely that Evushield is likely to be prescribed under the same new protocol that means prescription ONLY to the groups I pointed out AND only following a positive PCR test result. We need it to be available NOW as a preventative measure as these antibody cocktails can cut the risk of falling ill with Covid for the immunocompromised by more than 80% -
You're right, if UK requires a positive test first, that defeats the idea of prophylaxis. Let's hope they do what seems planned in the US. I expect it will not require a UK positive test based on the US info below.
MPNs should qualify, immunocompromise includes:
<<Active treatment for solid tumor and hematologic malignancies>>
It is used for those:
<<Who are not currently infected with SARS-CoV-2 and who have not had a known recent exposure to an individual infected with SARS-CoV-2 and
- Who have moderate to severe immune compromise due to a medical condition or
receipt of immunosuppressive medications or treatments and may not mount an
adequate immune response to COVID-19 vaccination>>
It is not allowed if you have Covid.
<<Evusheld is not authorized for use in individuals:
Completely agree. I do not understand why MPN's have been excluded. Blood Cancer uk is advising patients with MPNs to just tell the phone operators on 111 that we have blood cancer and not to mention MPN if we test positive in the hope that we get access to the medications. Although I agree, I thought we would get access to these medicines before we tested positive! We shouldn't have to be still finding work arounds after 2 years - it is the same with the booster. Why can't we book one like everyone else? I have been told I have to wait for my booster to be due and then try and find a walk in centre and go armed with all my documents to prove I am eligible. Last article I read on Blood Cancer Uk was that they had urgently asked the government for clarification on MPN's but even if they eventually agree, we will have missed the boat as the lists of those eligible have already been put in place. Who will have time to trawl through all the records again to find MPNs to add them?
That seems to be because the "system" dodes not have a space for recording 3rd vaccine as opposed to booster ! I will just go for 2nd booster in a couple of months - armed with he letters.....
HiI think you missed the point here. This is about prophylactic use of antivirals and antibody cocktails for the immunocompromised to hopefully prevent hospitalization. This is a major step forward but some Blood Cancer groups have not been included - hence Mazcd's comment.
I don't know if what happens in the US is of any help, but here is a chart that explicitly calls for Evusheld in MPNs, lower right box in this image from the link. We're in the 2nd highest of 4 risk categories.
My sister has received her letter from the NHS, she is 82 and has a heart condition. I am 74 with ET jak2+ for 12 years and have not received anything. My sister says she doesn't need it as she is not vulnerable, so I said if she is not going to use the medication she can give it to me as I certainly will. Its a lottery unfortunately. I have had to fight all the way for anything at our surgery. It is soul destroying at times, but I will persevere to get what I am entitled to.
