HYDROXY ADVICE.

Just need a little advice on taking my hydroxy. I have been taking 500mg once a day for about 18months, just had a call from my consultant to say to increase it to 1000mg twice a week, 500mg the rest of the week. I usually take 500mg at night to sleep off any side effects, is it possible to take the 1000mg at same time or do I have to space it out and take 2 doses of 500mg? Me being forgetful I forgot to ask this question when speaking with consultant. Thanks for any advice given.

I take both of mine in the evening on the days when I take two.

My consultant suggested taking two on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and one the rest of the week, which suggests even spacing isn’t crucial. I actually take two pills on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Hi Kizzy10 I like you take 500 daily and on Fri - Sat - Sun 1,000 daily I take mine after my breakfast along with my Aspirin, I was told it was fine to take the double dose together it was not a problem.Jean

I take 1gm and 1500mg at breakfast on alternate days.

I take mine at night too, on my box it is printed...Take one capsule daily on 5 days of the week and two capsules as one dose on 2 days per week. I have been following these instructions for 8 years.

Hi Kizzy, I would suggest do the same as I do and take one in the morning and one at night , I find taking the Hydroxy this way is less stressful on you stomach. I take the same dose with more besides. It does help. good luck. June

Hi Kizzy,I take one 500mg of Hydroxycarbamide in the evening as well with at least one or 2 hours interval taking the other 500mg and it works fine with me.take care always.

Hi. I take 500mg each evening and an extra 500mg on a Tuesday and Friday evening. Don’t think it really matters when / how you take them but that’s been my schedule for the past few years.

Has the consultant given you areason why they want to increase the dose? If not, i would ask.

I am on HU as well. I take 2 tablets on Tue, Thu, Sat and Sun, with 3 tablets on Mon, Wed, and Fri.

I take one in the morning and then the day's remaining tablet/s in the evening.

The reason I am increasing my dose is because my platelet level is not decreasing on one tablet, my hematocrits are high, having venesection on Monday. Thank you for your comment.

Good morning. In a similar way, I have 1000mgs x4 weekly and 500 mgs x3. I have taken the two capsules together for a few years , and touch wood no concerns, I've checked the box instructions but so far no specific advice to take the dose separately. Hope this helps and you are ok on your new dosage.

I am just going to start taking three a day and will space them out a bit because if they break open too soon after swallowing, the chemical coming back up is awful!

I take my 1000 both together three times a week. I do space the days out -but that was my choice. I also aim to drink 3 litres of water a day.

Hi Kizzy, I had similar to you and at the time consultant recommended taking the 1000 at the weekend, was easy to remember then, however is there a way you could check with your consultant which would be best?

You can take the two tablets together and you can take them on consecutive nights.I’m on two a night but Friday Saturday and Sunday I take 3 a night because that’s the way I will remember.

It’s entirely up to you.

Hi, so many different answers, it depends how you feel, no real correct answer. I take 1500mg x 6 days and 1000mg x 1 day. I take all in the morning in one go as I would probably forget to to take it later.

Since I take Fedratinib and hydroxy, I take my hydroxy in the morning, 1000 mg, because it makes me less drowsy than the Fedratinib. Before I began the Fedratinib, I would usually take the hydroxy at night. I don’t think it really matters when you take it, as long as you’re consistent.

I also take 1000 mg three times a week and 500 on other days. My doc said to take the higher dose on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. And I also take in the evenings.

I am on the similar regimen and was told that the two 500 mg could be taken at the same time or split, whichever works better for you.

Hi Kizzy ... yes I agree with everyone here that you can take the 1000 mg at once ... it works out the same in the end .... I too have had to keep track what days I take one and what days I take 2 ....and that changed a couple of times ..... what I did at first is I wrote out a little list and set alarms on my phone, a bit of a pain. But you can also take your 2 pills on saturdays and sundays ... weekends would indicate the 2 separate pills a day .... sorry I'm just rambling now ... but I'm sure you can take 2 at the same time !!! Well just to add to the confusion, I take 500mg one day, 1gm (ie 2 capsules together) the following day and then back to 500mg etc. which is what the medics advised. I've never been advised when in the day to take it and going by everyone's comments it seems to be a personal choice. Curious that everyone seems to have been advised differently. I don't think the info leaflet gives any recommendations as to when in the day to take it either. To cope with taking this in different doses on alternate days along with aspirin at lunchtime, lansoprazole on alternate days plus supplements I had to bite the bullet and buy one of those 7 day pill boxes with 4 compartments per day. The highlight of my week is Sunday evening when I load the box for the coming week's tablets! In my mind it was only really old people that have to use these things so it was quite a blow to get one but it does help remove the guesswork or reliance on memory.

Hi Kizzy - I take one hydroxy one day, two the next - rotate like that throughout the whole week. Take everything in the morning. Drink lots of water with them and through the day. I’ve been doing this 3+years and no problems. I’ll bet you won’t have any either!

I have changed doses a couple of times & now taking 2 hydroxy Daily through the week & 1 a day Saturday & Sunday. I take the 2 together in the evenings and was advised it was entirely my choice but once started should he consistent. I also have a 7 day pill box which I fill up on a Sunday evening (also take Omeprazol, Aspirin & Cetirizine daily) or I would forget!

I have been taking Hydroxycarbamide for the last 15 years and am now on 3 tablets, 1500, a day. I was told I could take them when I like so have always taken them in the mornings along with my other morning medication.
