Hydroxy side effect

I've been on 500mg of Hydroxy for 10 weeks. Right from the off I've experienced constipation. At my last clinic visit my consultant prescribed Senna. It doesn't work. I wonder if anyone else has this problem and a solution.

Brandon tablets. They are horrible tasting but they do work.

Not brandon. BRAN. Stupid auto correct.

I've had the same problem since even before I was diagnosed. I think it's partly hydration and partly medication. my doc prescribed dulcolax liquid and I've been taking it for years now. I find senza and bran ineffective and give me stomach ache.

Drink plenty of fluids - water, dilute juices, not just tea etc, no excessive salt

Eat well, enjoy your favourite foods but ensure variety of textures and colours:

Lots of fibre - wholegrain breakfast cereals, fruit and yoghurts, get you full ration of vegetables and fruit every day and more.

Avoid pre-processed foods with a long shelf life

Eat fresh - make the effort, spoil yourself and share your meals, the company and the effort. Home made chicken stock and vegetable broth is my favourite (finely grate the veg and drop in at the last moment for a fibre, mineral and vitamin boost).

Gentle exercise, keep moving

I make these cup cakes - keep them in the fridge. In a heat resistant bowl placed over a pan of simmering hot water, melt 2ox black treacle (good heaped tablespoon), 2oz butter and 4 oz cooking chocolate (look for high cocoa solids, Tesco is good and Dr Oetker when on offer). While the mixture is melting de-nest your paper cases and make a cup of tea. With the bowl still over the hot water add a good 4 oz of bran flakes - I like Tesco (with fortified iron) or you can use Fruit and fibre or experiment with any cereal, although Weetabix does not have the texture. You can add an 'extra' at this stage - eg dried fruit. I like a good spoonful of coconut. Carefully spoon into the paper cases over the bowl as the mixture tends to fall off the spoon easily. Place each one on a large plate and put in the fridge to set. Wash the bowl with the hot water. Don't use a saucepan as the direct heat overcooks the mixture and makes a mess which is not what we want. They are 'more'ish' - and good. Sue

Really??? That is very interesting. Also wanted to tell you because we talked about the shingles shot, my Hemo Dr now says it is ok to get that shot if your immune system is not comprised, now go figure only a month ago he said no. Cannot figure it out, LOL.

Hi Mickey , The shingles shot ban came right from the top , Prof Claire Harrison. However I guess this is all based on theoretical risk and nobody has properly evaluated it in a blind trial. Are you going to be the guinea pig?

As to constipation I I never get the problem but I drink plenty of red wine and some beer. I take 12 tablets of HC a week

Thumbs up to the above! Though I don't suffer much even on a slightly higher dose for much longer , If ever I do - pickled onions work - sometimes too well. I suppose we are all different though, It is just a matter of working out what does it for you. B.

My Dr prescribed Laxido to use with codeine - noted for causing constipation - and I guess it would work with HYdroxy if it's causing you a problem

I eat a Fiber One bar every morning, peanut butter & chocolate. It has 6 grams of fiber. Very delicious and works great for me. Not sure if you have them there (I live in USA, Pennsylvania)

We give our patients kiwi crush, or just eating good old kiwi fruit works wonders!!

Thanks for your ideas everyone. I can see how blended fruit and veg with skin on, pips in etc could work. Just had a health crisis with my 90 yr old dad and the initial stress side effect did away with my problem for a couple of days, in fact the caused the opposite.

What is Kiwi crush. Shortcylist hope your Dad is ok, Stress makes mine worse always has. But before I even start HU I had IBS.

Hi, I am a newby to HU also and straight away I became constipated which is not my norm at all, I ahave always been as regular as clockwork. I tried senekot and such with no effect so decided to look in the chemist and found a natural drink Aloa Vera, it helps a lot of ailments so they say and also skin and hair, nails which concerns me with HU. As of now, since I started taking this around 90ml each morning, it does the trick, thank goodness. It was horrible to suddenly be constipated, nearly a week right from the start. I think it is the Aloa Vera so hope this helps. It comes in flavours, I take the Berry.
