Hi Jody !! It can be leucoplacia, but also a special sort of exceme building up little calcified pieces/flakes in the skin.

Almost all leukoplakia patches are noncancerous (benign), though some show early signs of cancer. Cancers on the bottom of the mouth can occur next to areas of leukoplakia. And white areas mixed in with red areas (speckled leukoplakia) may indicate the potential for cancer. So it's best to see your or primary care professional if you have unusual, persistent changes in your mouth.

Doctors blame tobacco as the main reason. very irritating and confusing to non smokers.

I spill out this rather callous answer to you, because I've been through the same, but mine spots were caused by old allergic reaction together with bad blood circulatien caused by my Pegasys jabs. So called "undernourished blisters" !!

We get so many "perks" from our medics and diseases ;) -- I hope this is a goodhearted one for you !!

All the best --soon spring will be here !!

PS Have you had your Covid jab yet ?

Morning,Never heard of the above but nice to be alerted to it.

I had a bcc on the roof of my mouth about 4 years ago. No worries, it’s my fourth around the head area. Side effects of Hydroxi apparently. I don’t often lie in the sun with my mouth open., in fact I don’t sit or lie in the sun at all.

As you say yarrow, another perk.

However, we’re alive and well so let’s not moan!

I had a significant level of apparent leukoplakia as a side effect from hydroxyurea. In my case it caused such significant dyschromia of the tongue that it turned to surface solid white. The effects mostly disappeared when I discontinued the hydroxyurea, but there were some permanent changes to the surface of my tongue (geographic tongue).

The protocol for leukoplakia is to monitor for oral cancers (as yarrowleaf indicates). Since HU can cause oral carcinomas, it is something to be aware of/monitor (if you are on HU or other medications with the adverse effect). What you are describing may also be stomatitis, which is one of the very common side effects.

Hope you get is sorted out ASAP.

Jody, this link discusses two deficiencies related to leukoplakia zinc and vitamin A. Remember zinc depletes copper. I encourage you to research for others. Always consult your health care professional before using any supplement.

White streaks on your cheeks or gums could also be a condition called lichen planus, also a benign condition. A biopsy would confirm either. Red patches in the mouth are generally worse to have than white. Good luck at your appointment.
