About 4 months ago, I reported I had lost my sense of smell about a year before. First, I want to thank everyone who responded. I’m happy to report that my sense of smell has returned as suddenly as I had lost it. I still have no idea what caused it. But, it’s wonderful to be able to taste food again, as well as smells that are not so great, like smoke and sour milk.
Anyway, I just wanted to share that. Thanks again to all who responded.

That’s great news - can’t even imagine the loss of taste. Pity they do not nderstand the cause
Fab news , , a strange one though. I think its another area we dont fully understand. I can empathise as my olfactory isn't half what it should be. And I lost most of my taste and what I did taste wasn't how it ought to be, following my SCT. It's a well documented side effect and it did return gradually but some days still, isn't tip top.
Funnily enough for a short time after my GVHD calmed my sense of smell was greatly heightened but alas it didn't last.
Losing your senses of smell and therefore taste certainly doesn't help with Covid around. Some days I need to put something strong in my mouth like liquorice to make sure I can still taste.
I'm glad that you are able to enjoy your food again there's not many pleasures in life during these unprecedented times.
Thank you so much for your reply. I know that taste buds do change over time as we get older, and I’m not surprised that your treatments affected your sense of smell. My boyfriend gets annoyed with me when I cook because he says I put too much spice in our food, but for a while, everything tasted the same.
I hope over time your sense of smell and taste return for good and you can enjoy the simple pleasures of eating again.
No, I don’t think it’s related to Covid. If you read my post 4 months ago, I stated that I started smelling something like gasoline at random times and places in September of 2019. Eventually, the chemical smell disappeared and that’s when I lost my sense of smell completely. The whole experience was very strange.
Oh, that's lovely, welcome back to baking bread and garbage cans (hard to imagine you can miss those but you can). I lost my sense of smell/taste for months and now it comes and goes - although goes much less frequently now. I also have intense and completely random smells on and off for days, also much less frequently now. Sometimes I think I've just become accustomed and don't notice as much. My cooking is most affected and consequently random on the taste scale and I've no idea if it's edible until we get to the table where I watch my husband's face! What a weird disease we have...the neurological manifestations are particularly odd for those of us that have them. You need a damn good sense of humour. I had gentle raindrops on my face for months and still miss them, lol.
Thanks, ladyanello. I can relate to everything you’re saying. Mine started out as a chemical smell. You feel a little foolish when no one else can smell it. And then when I lost my smell/taste, my partner always said I put too much spice in the food. I’m really glad it’s back but as you said, there are some things you wish you couldn’t smell. Lol
