Hand Sanitizers and Disinfectants

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone has any knowledge or opinion on the use of hand sanitizers or disinfectants by mpn'ers during this time of Covid.

I have read in the past that chemicals, (especially benzene, not in either) have been implicated in causing diseases and/or gene mutations. I am constantly using hand sanitizers with various chemicals in them and using various disinfecting chemicals on my house and auto. I am wondering if using these chemicals could pose any threat to us with an mpn as I believe that some of these chemicals are probably absorbed thru the skin.

It probably has nothing to do with it but my platelets have gone up by 100,000 since the pandemic began in March and are staying there over multiple tests. May just be the natural progression of the disease but they stayed pretty much the same over the past 4 years before this started. I am 71 with ET Jak2+.

Chemicals affect everyone’s health negatively . Even if it’s subtle . So we are bound to be more susceptible

I use natural producers for cleaning and tend to wear disposable gloves when out so I can use shops sanitizer on them rathe r than hands .

I have a bottle of natural hand sanitizer that I use when no water available to wash if needed

Thanks for your reply, I guess about all chemicals carry some risk.

I suppose I look at my health as a whole not just MPN diagnosis and try my best to avoid toxic stuff

Interesting question. I think my approach would be that there is a known danger of Covid and it's a case of balance between that and the undesirability of using various substances on my skin. I don't go out much (my husband does the shopping at the moment) so I would only use gel if, for example, I have touched a gate on a walk or a car park ticket machine. I would rather risk hand gel than Covid.

I honestly don't know if such products would have a significant effect through absorption through the skin, but I think it's a good idea to wear rubber gloves when cleaning - if nothing else, cleaning products tend to dry the skin.

Thank you for the reply, I have not been able to find any information online to answer the question, maybe someone has heard or read something specific.

Thank you, you have made me realise that soap and water is far better than hand sanitizer . Less pollution too.
