I have been with Dr Shafi for under 2 years but he has been an amazing support to me and my family as we came to terms with my diagnosis of Myelofibrosis. During every visit, he was so accommodating, informative and supportive. Seeing his welcoming smile at each and every visit, put us at ease and we assured us we were in good hands.
Although he was only in our lives for a short period of time, he will live long in our hearts and minds.
Our thoughts are with his family (who he spoke of often) at this difficult time.
He was truly a great doctor and human being, and a real NHS hero

We saw this on South east news. It was obvious the staff were shocked and deeply saddened by his death. His kindness and what he did for haematology in his hospital was focused on. But hamanity and kindness was top. So sorry you have lost such a good doctor.
Indeed it is so sad for you, however he has made a difference for you which is a positive aspect in your case. Perhaps you could plant a tree in his memory there are many people doing this.
Take care ,keep safe as we are all doing our bit. Thank you for sharing this.
Yes no one is safe from this incredibly contagious virus. I was speaking to friend today who has a degree in biology to day whose wife is a micro biologist. He said he thought it possible that they may never get a vaccine for this virus because it shares a number of common traits with the common cold virus. As he pointed out there is no vaccine for the common cold. He thought the best bet was drugs to treat the effects of the virus and the virus once someone has contracted it. He pointed out that Covid19 has already mutated thousands of times already and like the common cold virus might change so significantly in 3 months to be treated by the "current" vaccine.
That is a very good point to make, it is also worth remembering that we have flu vaccine but there are many different variations of even flu. Wonder how we will progress from this awful situation.
The flu vaccine has never put a dent in the number of flu deaths. I would never get myself vaccinated for this. I also believe that a vaccine will not be found for Corona. I just hope that when it mutates, it will be less dangerous.
So sorry to hear that, such awful times we’re living in just now. So many doctors and nurses wing lost while trying to help others. Condolences to you and the Dr’s family. So sad 😞
I’m so very sorry. Such an enormous loss to the profession and the community. But wonderful that Dr Shafi had such a huge and positive impact on the lives of so many people. A life to be truly celebrated as much as mourned.
We all need to feel that we can relate to our Haematogist and when that relationship works well it can make a big difference to how we feel about our MPN. I’m glad you had that support and hopefully you will find that support again in the future. It is just so sad that these people who show such dedication to their profession are being taken away by this viscous virus. There are so many heroes in the NHS and we really do owe them all a big debt of gratitude. I like the idea of planting a tree in his memory. It sounds as though he was a lovely man who deserves to be remembered.
Dr Shafi was my consultant Haematologist too, my heart is broken about the news of his demise. He was such a kind and gentle soul, always made you feel at ease in his clinic. Very soft spoken and truly cares about his patients. I have been under his care since 2015. Prayers and thoughts go out to his family. May his beautiful soul rest in perfect peace.
So very sad to hear that, I feel for you too as I know how I feel about my consultant her value and care of me is priceless. It's vile what is happening to NHS staff. Thinking of you x
So sorry for your loss. These are terrible times and our doctors and nurses are on the front lines every day. So very sad for him, his family, and the community.
Sorry to hear of the loss! I went to my appointment back in March and found the doctor and PA were no longer with the office. I didn't have the heart or maybe mindset to ask were they were but know something was gravely different. The doctor I saw who was really good but had me confused with another patient. Later that night I couldn't sleep as I just keep thinking about the event. I ended up going on line and found out that two of there locations have shut down and were now the patients were being seen in the office I was at. I have an appointment coming up in a month or two and hopefully will know more. Again I am so sorry for your loss!!
So very sad and such a loss. Our haematologist are in our lives from the beginning of our MPN journeys. They are all a huge part of helping us learn to live with our MPNs. Thank you to all our NHS staff.
Thank you everyone for such kind words and comments, they were all lovely to hear. This is a very supportive community that we all reluctantly belong to. I wish you all the very best as we travel our journeys...
I feel so sad about this. And he is one of many who have lost their lives caring for us. Please accept my heart felt condolences. This is a tragic loss for his family, friends, patients and colleagues.
So tragic. A terrible blow to his family, colleagues and patients like yourself. It means a lot to have a trusted specialist when health is vulnerable. It's a tribute to him that he's so well regarded but a terrible loss of life; a loved one & a champion for others.
I hope you continue to get good care under his team, I'm sure a specialist such as he would have left a legacy of good practice.
He sounds amazing and your life is better because of him. What a shock for you I hope you will find the same level of support and caring from who ever fills his place.
I hope his family have lots of lovely memories in these tough times.
