Problem reflux
Hi Chel. I'm not on hydroxycarbamide, just aspirin and Pepcid (famotidine) for now. The first month on the aspirin and extra fluids was a little rough. My daily headache was sent packing, but I felt water logged and my GI system was off. Fortunately, this has all worked itself out. I hope you have the same experience.
Were you taking omeprazole from the start along with the hydroxy and aspirin?
If so it could be the omeprazole lowering your stomach acid too much which will also give you reflux. My wife was prescribed omeprazole only because she was on hydroxy and Anagrelide and was constantly getting GI bleeds, since stopping the omeprazole she has had no episodes of reflux and no GI bleeds.
You have not been taking the HU for v long. It takes some time for your body to adjust. Try drinking water with a straw … I manage more that way than sipping from a glass. Good Luck. Salllie
It sounds like your body is having a bit of a go at adapting the meds. Omeprazole can make you a bit gassy. The HU can cause nausea, vomiting, and other GI issues. The aspirin is of course a GI irritant. I switched over to Nexium quite some time ago and it worked better for me than omeprazole. No way to know whether it would do the same for you. You can, of course, treat the gas with conventional OTC meds as needed.
Regarding hydration - it is VERY important when on HU. Remember that HU is a toxin and that the lack of proper hydration can increase the side effects/toxicity of the HU. Water is good, but you can also drink other beverages so long as you do not overdo the caffeine, sugar or artificial sweeteners. Non-caffeine/herbal teas are a nice way to go for a bit of variety. Sorry - beer does not count for hydration as the alcohol is dehydrating. Though I would note that as our Czech friends say "beer is a meal." Or as Ben Franklin said "beer is eloquent proof that God loves mankind." That being said, alas - hefting a point does NOT count as hydration.
All the best to you.
