I have hyponatremia (low sodium). If I am not careful I end up unconscious in a hospital (it happened four times)

It can have very serious and dire consequences and it is important you seek a full evaluation. I NEVER drink plain water because lack of electrolytes in water. Also I am on fluid volume restriction. Hopefully, your situation is more mild than mine but only your physician can help. Several medications can cause low sodium. I am glad you have a GP who will be helping you

How much water are you drinking a day?Have you mentioned this to your GP? You can have too much of a good thing.

Some medications eg certain antidepressants can also lower your sodium levels.

Hi catwoman2015, I like osteomyelio also have Hyponatremia and can cause a variety of symptoms including severe leg cramps and weakness. When I was diagosed by a routine blood test at my Gp's I was told it was more than likely down to the amount of medication I was on but I also suspect the fluid volume over the course of a day! I take sodium chloride for this and when I next saw my Haemo and mentioned it he looked back over previous blood tests he said my sodium levels were low and had been for some time. He also said I needed to add more salt to my chips! Unbelievably I eat more salt than the average person and friends have expressed concern at the amount I use because I am on blood pressure meds! Atb tina.🤗

Hi holly, are you adding your other fluid intake during the day, ie, tea, coffee, soft drinks and alcohol if you drink? It all counts. As mary says (mhs61) it is best asking your Haemo on your next visit.

Why is someone with hyponatremia told to drink 2 liters of water a day?

I was told to have a cup of high sodium chicken broth every morning instead of coffee— this has helped me

Remember that the advice of two litres per day applies to all fluids - not just plain water. Tea, coffee, milk, even beer all count towards the total fluid intake and can result in too much sodium being washed out of your body. Might be worth keeping a diary of fluid intake to get some more definitive figures to discuss with your doctor.

Hi by sodium I presume you mean salt? I had low levels after a d and v bug. I ate more salt - and I eat a lot anyway. However I never eat the cheap saxa stuff which is packed with rubbish.

I buy Halen Mon. Beautiful salt which never causes me a problem - my levels are spot on, and as I say - I do eat quite a lot x

Interesting question, I have low sodium ranging 127 to 129. How low are you lot?

Assumed it was healthy low sodium diet and increased water consumption. Been increasing salt intake but no difference

Best Paul

I didn’t ask the number Paul but I know when it’s good it’s 135 if that helps

Osteomyelio profile image
Osteomyelio in reply toPaul123456

Paul what do your doctors say about your sodium?

What are your chloride and potassium levels?

Paul123456 profile image
Paul123456 in reply toOsteomyelio

Chloride is low at 91, Potassium fine.

My Hem is referring me to renal specialist but thinks a result of Pegasys.

I’ve recently dramatically increased my sodium intake and (equally dramatically) reduced my Pegasys (since too good a reaction) so be surprised if Peg the culprit

My mother-in-law (94) almost died of low sodium in November. Lucky I noticed. It was really low. She’d had diarrhea and her medications (water pill and antidepressant- which we took away) which were also depleting her sodium, causing the condition. Eventually she felt horrifically nauseous and the doctor said it was a virus. I didn’t give up and researched and found solutions. The doctor finally came over and gave her 3 Infusions of sodium chloride on that evening. i also gave her electrolytes 3 days in a row and that was it. She now takes electrolytes once a week to make sure her body stays balanced.

It is necessary to ask your doctor what the cause of the low sodium might be! Too many people avoid sodium because it’s in style to protect yourself from high blood pressure, even if you don’t have it. Be careful. Sodium is really important for hundreds of cell and organ functions. 🙂 Anag
