I read that kiwi fruit can increase platelets???? Does anyone know if they do? I love kiwi fruit and they seem to have a lot of health benefits however with having ET I'll avoid them if this is the case.

I didn't know about bananas. I imagine you would have to eat a lot for a difference in platelets? I currently eat two a day so not sure wether to continue eating them. I also like and eat kiwi fruit

Yes very much so is Papaya leaf drinking it, and eating papaya, kiwi kale, broccoli, carrots oranges. Bananas are good but not much. Also raisins, nuts. Right now I am struggling with my platelets, too much medication but I am getting there with lots of beef liver and onions and boiled papaya leaves. Oh well, good luck too you.

Are you drinking papaya leaf to reduce platelets?

No to increase platelets, to reduce you should talk to your doctors and low dose aspirin is probably the safest.

Thankyou for the info but I'm a little confused. Do you mean the food items you've mentioned increase platelets?

Well that's rather worrying if there's any truth in it.. I eat at least one kiwi a day and have done for a long time. Presently on Pegasys, my platelets have been in normal range for approximately one year!

Thanks for all your replies it's very interesting.

Ive read kale, sweet potato and

Broccoli increase platelets I still eat them in small portions. As for bananas I probably eat 1 a day, I eat lots of nuts and raisins and carrots. My platelets have been averaging 480 ish. I have ET jak2 +.

Infact before diagnosis 2018 I ate loads of broccoli, sweet potato soup most days and kale and to be honest my platelets were lower than they are now so that's been confusing for me 🥴 maybe foods effect different people in different ways???? My hematologist told me to just eat a healthy balanced diet so I'll probably eat kiwi fruit in moderation.

Although green kiwi fruits are higher in K, but please don't forget kiwi fruits are packed of healthy vitamin especially vitamin C, antioxidant, good for heart health etc etc. If prefer, gold kiwi fruits are much less vitamin K and lots of vitamin C. I have ET and I eat lots of fruits everyday especially fruits contain natural aspirin. Fruits donot increase platelet, of course eating lots of veg and fruits high in K may make our blood thicker, but we also need some vitamin K in our body. I also eat paw paw which is packed of nutrition, banana is good source of potassium, oranges helps thin the blood, apple has natural aspirin etc etc etc. Please do not stop eating fruits. I have been having 2-3 different type of fruits every single day, my platelet count has not increased at all. With Hydrea treatment my platelets are now dropped to 309. Fruits do us good, lots of good. My haematologist has in fact encourage me to keep my usual anti inflammatory diet, which is concentrated on whole grain, fruits, vegetables, fish and certain meat. I also have a handful of nuts (especially walnuts and almonds) with natural omega 3 and natural dried fruits like apricots and peaches with small amount of natural raisen. Please don not afraid having fruits.

So now I am really confused. Are there certain foods (fruits/vegetables/etc. that increase platelet counts and should be avoided or monitored? On the other hand, are there foods that can actually reduce the platelet count or keep it in check? If you have good info, perhaps you can provide a link Thank you!

Hi milw532

I wish I could answer that question but unfortunately I've had diet anxiety since I was diagnosed 😵 my understanding thus far is views on the subject on wide and varied. Some people on this forum have very strict diets while others advise a healthy balanced diet I try to do the latter.

I do try to eat anti inflammatory food where I can. My hematologist said eat a healthy balanced diet. I do understand your confusion thought.

On a different level I read recently that eating tomatoes (the seeds in particular) stop platelets being so sticky. Has anyone else heard this?

No I haven't but I love Tom's so I hope it's correct 😋

I personally don't see how food can make any difference to a gene mutation
