High MCV

Hi Everyone,

Did anyone have consistently high MCV (mean corpuscles Volume) with Polycythemia is that possible high MCV in PV?

I'm not sure about consistently high, but when I was diagnosed in 1983, all the counts were high, not just the red cells, but white and platelets too. I'm not sure it was broken down into the different categories that we see today. Hydroxyurea (now called Hydroxycarbamide) kept it under control, after first being put on Busulaphan.

I went through a spell of high MCV along with low RBC. I am told it's to be expected if you take Hydroxycarbamide.

My counts are almost back within normal range by reducing Hydroxycarbamide and having venesections to compensate.

Am only on baby aspirin 75 mg per day

and not have any other medicine.

Am still under observation bcs my all test negative and my EPO is normal also i have not increase in WBC and platelates.

Only reason for my high PCV is my High MCV

Hi vigiindia,i have consistently high mcv's due to hydrea but i do know that other medication and lacking in b12 and heavy drinking are amonst the other causes. I have etjak2 and take a high dose for the condition. Atb,tina.🤗

Yes heavy drinking cause high mcv and i was a heavy drinker,now after one month of diagnosis i quit all my habits completely and my blood seems pretty good MCV is also slightly dropping down.

But it can b possible that before diagnosis PV has high MCV?

Hi,you would have to talk with your haemotologist about it, but like i said their are other causes to high mcv's too. The normal range is around 80- 96fl in adults. Mine were 123-1 last month,due back to see haemo in 2 weeks. Atb,tina.🤗

I'm PV on hydroxy and my MCV went up when I started on hydroxy. In te last year it has ranged from 102 to 118fL
