Panicking- high platelets

Blood tests showed high at 525, my GP is referring me for a chest X-ray, camera down the throat, uterine and colon tests too. Have smoked 20 a day for 30odd years. He said high level can indicate cancer. So scared.

Has anyone else had this please?

High platelets can mean all kinds of things - blood disorders like we have on this forum, but lots of other things too. I can well imagine you’d be scared after your doc said that, but 525 isn’t that high so try not to worry (easier said than done I know). Stay away from Dr Google as it won’t be helpful at all in terms of your own situation and often just causes more needless worry. And hopefully you’ll get your tests quickly so you can see what’s going on. And just as it may indicate a blood cancer like we have (and which we live with for decades in most cases), it also may not.

Thanks so much

As Willey has stated your platelets are not high, I have had patients where I work with platelets over 1mil and they havent got MPN. When I was going through diagnoses of ET I had to have three stool specs, and I knew what she was looking for! The Drs have to do these tests.

Many thanks, just wish Dr hadn’t mentioned the C word.!

Yeah it is a scary word. Nobody wants to hear it so you havent got that on you own. Where is your pain? and how old are you if you dont mind me asking? Have you managed to give up smoking?

The only pain has been osteoarthritis, plus neck discs. Was a routine blood test, GP has given me nicotine gum to help me stop

You have a gp

who is on the ball. I had to wait to see a heamo before I was referred for all those tests.

It is a frightening time. Your GP is cautious.

High platelets can indicate an infection in your body and

all these tests will help illuminate

causes.

Hold tight. Try not to smoke in order to eliminate stress.

Easier said than done from an ex smoker.

Yes very true, changed to this GP last year. He really is. You’re so right about smoking too!

Hello,

Try not to worry too much my platelets were over 500 even when I was on hydroxy, they are now 1400 as I have stopped taking the drugs, they have been around this level for over a year now and my consultant isn’t overly concerned,

Now, calm down me old China. Stress will make it much worse!

Your gp is just being careful.

My platelets have been as high as 800.

They come down again. Lots of weird things can force your platelets up but

honestly you really musn’t worry.

If you do end up with one of these blood cancers ( which is why I presume, you’r eon this site?) it ABSOLUTELY is NOT the end of the world.

They’re treatable. Most people with an MPN are near normal and feel fine. Remember on this site you will only come across a very very very small minority of folk who might not feel so good - most of us are tickety boo.

I’ve just waved off my twin 7 monthold grandsons, and am now off for a 5 mile walk with friends.

Chin up, cup three quarters full, and don’t panic Mrs Mannering!

Little tip. STOP SMOKING! NOW. And keep away from those horrible vapour things as well, full of chemicals.

Love

Louise

Please don't panic, I agreed with other members that your platelets are not really that high although it's higher than normal range. To rule out whether it's because of any inflammations or not, and to be sure whether it's a blood disorder like ours, only bone marrow biopsy can give an accurate diagnosis. If your dr is not MPN dr you may be best to refer to a haematologist whose familiar treating MPN. In fact a blood test should be able to indicate whether your high platelets are due to inflammations or not, if not that may mean it's primary, blood disorder. Hope you'll be able to find someone who can treat your condition properly. But don't panic.

When I was admitted to hospital with burst dudenial ulcer my platlets were up to 1.700 and they told me in a &e. they were looking for leukaemia which frightened me to death ,after 6 days in hospital with various tests,6 days of IV antibiotics 4 blood transfusions bag of iron and camera down and few weeks later a bone marrow biopsy ,they came to conclusion I have mpd ,et ..... Frightening yes but Ive come to terms with it and found you can live a long fairly healthy life with it ,I am overweight through packing in smoking all those years ago but now due to this condition am doing something about that too have found gym and swimming is also helping with the mental issues you get the main thing is don't panic and listen to your Drs good luck ....I was only diagnosed in April

My level have been 400-500s for years. I'm 34. They have been that way since my 20s. No one has said cancer. Do you have any symptoms?

Ohtobepainfree profile image
Ohtobepainfree in reply to Ssaunders

Hadn’t noticed any symptoms, Dr asked if I was swallowing ok etc.

Have your platelets always been high? If it is a one time high blood test could be inflammation? Good to have tests done to be safe. My GP referred me to a hematologist who did a bone marrow biopsy that confirmed my MPN, but this may have nothing to do with your case. Hope all goes well, good luck.

They were only high in last two blood tests. First dr said could me due to an infection (I had a bad cold then)

Thank you for your good wishes

My platelets were over 1200 for over three years, which my GP ignored. It is great that your GP is being thorough, even though your platelets aren't high. Good luck to you

525 is not that high. When I was diagnosed my p's were over a million. How did you even find this site? Do not self diagnose. Stay off internet. I "had" every cancer/disease on the planet. I was diagnosed with blood tests, bone marrow biopsy to confirm. I had never heard of an MPN, then known as an MPD. All my internet searches were in vain.

I’ve found this site very helpful, first joined many years ago after having hips replaced. Agree best to not self diagnose, merely asked after being told by my GP
