Curcumin and JAK2

Interesting article but dated mid 2018 so our Hems should be aware of it if major breakthrough. My concern would be whether it interferes with our medications.

For those of us on aspirin, it could be one blood thinner too many. I get nose bleeds when on both.

‘“This study evaluates curcumin treatment in JAK2 mutated cell line, suggesting that it could be useful in the future for treatment of JAK2 V617F mutated patients.”

Thanks again as always, Paul. I remember reading somewhere that Curcumin can reduce platelets which meant I stopped using it immediately as my platelet count has hovered around 30 for many months. This is interesting that it affects Jak stat pathway but it didn’t specifically mention an effect on platelets. I might add that to my list of questions for Prof Harrison next week.

It would be great to hear her response if you can share it.

Possibly until this study reaches a conclusion the usual advice should be to ask our hospital specialists about any supplement before taking it.

Although this NHS article only mentions warfarin I understood that any supplement taken with a blood thinning drug should be treated with utmost caution. Also that a doctor/clinical nurse/pharmacist, with their extensive training, are the only safe people to give advice about this complex subject.

The clinic I go to is lucky to have a pharmacist attending and I have found them extremely helpful and willing to discuss drug interactions.

I have read that curcmin can react with our medications, but surely if this test reported was with MPNs, then the more common medications would be involved too. I see the trial was conducted in a University -but seems to be funded by drug companies. As you say, it is probably significant that haems haven't promoted it, but it would be good to hear the full discussion.
