Someone has suggested pomegranite juice? I have looked on various websites and it seems to be a good source. Does anyone have any experience?

Hi,I stayed in Spain for 4 months last year, where I got addicted to pomegranite.I ate and drank a lot of it.Came back and still was anaemic so didn't help me!🙂

I have heard pomegranate is good for something, I have been taking it in the form of pomegranate molasses which can be purchased in some supermarkets and also on Amazon. I add a glug of it in smoothies or in hot water to make a pleasant drink. As for iron, my haemoglobin is low, I have always had low iron, the school nurse commented on it when I was 10. This could just be natural for me, I have always been very resistant to infections. Why try artificially raise the iron level when the body may not want it to be very high. I mentioned iron to Prof Harrison at my last haemo appointment and I had another blood test done just for iron, the results will a couple of days to come through.
Nothing helps me I’m afraid.
I have high ferritin levels so no supplement helps. I spoke to a dietician and increased my protein fruit and veg significantly. My haemogloin dropped slightly.
However with the disappointing hg levels I went on a chocolate binge now there is a small rise. I’ve noticed this before. I’m convinced there is something in chocolate my body loves ( apart from my hips) lol

Cocoa is high in magnesium and all sorts of other minerals. Not all magnesiums are equal. Those in the know say that magnesium citrate commonly included in the cheaper multivitamin tablets is not very good, it is better to take something like magnesium glycinate, I take organic cocoa powder mixed in hot water as a drink to avoid the sugar in chocolate, I am not worried about the fat content.
I do take magnesium glycinate which does seem to reduce the amount of cramps that I get and I think does help me sleep, but as many have said on this site, we never know what would be happening 'normally' and what is related to the MPN or medication

The dietary advice given generally is to avoid salt but I take extra salt, about half a teaspoon of quality salt like Himalayan Pink Salt or Cornish Sea Salt, but definitely not table salt which has all the micronutrients stripped out of it. I used to get leg cramps at night in bed but have not had any now for a long time. Of course it could be the extra magnesium causing it. My blood pressure has not gone up at all as a result.
On another point though. After my knee cartilage repair three weeks ago my lymphocytes have dropped to 1.1 from 1.9 the low end of the norm is 1.5.
I’ve googled and pomegranates are good for the immune system.
To day I’ve picked up freshly pressed pomegranate juice from Tesco. I think it’s a new line as I googled where to buy it a few months ago. Then it was only available in Sainsbury’s.
Do you take Vitamin D3? An endocrinologist told me to take 800iu of Vit D, this was five years ago, I noticed straight away that the soreness in my knees disappeared. I now take 5000iu and I can do anything, trampolining, running, with impunity
Just researched it. Think I’m going to get some. I’m spending so much time on the sofa these days I bet I don’t have enough anyway.

Coconut oil and D3 could work synergistically. I was told that turmeric and pepper work well together, that's why they are often sold together in tablet form. I grate fresh organic turmeric into hot water and a twist of pepper for a pleasant drink. I am not sure if it helps but it does not do harm, either. Also I read that adding Vitamin C into rosehip tea enhances its effect.
I’ll look into it thanks. I take a multi vitamin for my eyes ( dry macula degeneration ) my eyes haven’t changed for about 10 years. So I have to be careful about what vitamins I take. I haven’t heard of vitamin D3. I wonder if it’s in chocolate!

Interesting you ask about pomegranite. I'm not trying to boost my iron -as low is good for my PV. However, I have been researching foods which could help lower platelets and pomegranates are recommended on a few sites. The only problem is, that on another site, it said they were good for boosting platelets! I think nutritional research in this area is in its early stages.
I have low iron but high haemoglobin and my consultant said don’t take iron supplements as it could cause an episode. Instead I have monthly B12 injections to try and combat it
