MPs call for more blood cancer testing by GPs

Blood cancer's "vague" symptoms, like tiredness and bruising, mean it is more likely a patient's diagnosis is delayed, MPs say.

GPS needed to be trained in what an MPN is as I have been told once I was wasting her time asking for blood test although was arranged by consultant her exact words who the hell do you think you are demanding a blood test told consultant he went ballistic and a nasty letter was sent to practice manager there needs to be an education programme rolled out to GPS on what MPNS are and how they should be treated rather than getting same old answer I do not really know whats wrong better phoning consultant or if your lucky your MPN clinical nurse specialist I am crying for every haematology clinic to have one saving a registrar coming down from ward leaving them to deal with in patient MPNRs or someone coming in as an emergency MPN sufferer brings down waiting times and stops clinics running late as they are left with a consultant running clinic on own

Let's hope they do, we seem to be 'poor relations' ,many Drs have no idea how difficult life can be with an MP N. The first G P I saw told me I was 'doing too much for my age', thank goodness I was returning to our French house, the local Dr there saved my life,my H C T was over 80, nurses in the hospital could not get blood out of my veins, consultant said that my being alive was amazing.......How many others have died with strokes etc,not being diagnosed with the fatigue ,headaches, red face ,hands,eyes,......Lets Hope.

Desperately needed, 2 gp's missed my high platelets. I asked and was told, don't worry about it, probably related to recent infection. It happened again, I found it on my results, doctor didn't. I didn't ask, because of what I was previously told. Third time it happened, finally referred! Always get your test results always ask about anything abnormal.

My recent gp remarked: I see you have an inherited blood condition! I said no, it is not inherited, she snapped, well I see there is a genetic mutation! I said yes but it is a somatic mutation. She replied, so it just happened to you!

Nice, they sure don't like being corrected! She didn't know what it was, and most importantly chose not to do her homework.

Big sigh, thanks for letting me vent! I am sure there are many stories to be told!

Take care.

It was a locum that spotted my high platelets and referred me. Usual GP had said it was just an undiagnosed infection! He's not a lot wiser 7 or 8 years on!
