Hi Lainy
I use Vichy idΓ©al soleil factor 50. They do a tinted one which gives a healthy glow but is a bit greasy or a normal one which is quite matte. It's French but easily available in Boots. Might be worth a try. Do be careful
Best wishes Hilary
Thanks hillary, been reading stuffor about either chemical or mineral ones. Mmmmm think I might go to shops tomorrow and test a few.
Weather to be hot this weekend π and I don't want to sit in the house hiding from the sun.
Best wishes lainy x
My Haematology nurse got a recommendation from a Cancer Nurse for La Riche-Posay - Anthelios XL for the face. There are two types - clear and tinted. I've tried both. The clear one left me a little white faced - not a lot but I look a bit poorly. The tinted one was a bit dark for my non-suntand face, so next time I use it I'm going to mix them together (hope they don't go streaky lol).
You can get them from Boots, or, if they're not stocked by your nearest Boots, you can order them online to be picked up there a couple of days later.
Hi Iainy
I have used Ultrasun factor 50 for a while now (for quite a while before my PV diagnosis) and been very pleased with it. They do a seperate one for face and Body, tinted and clear. Marks and Spencer stock a good range of their products as do QVC

Hi, I was put on hydroxy 2 weeks ago and had same recommendations. I took myself yo Boots and treated myself to the Estee Lauder daycream with factor 50. It was recommended by the sales assistant who herself had been checked out for skin cancer. It is not greasy or white at all. As it is expensive I first apply my old cream ( spf 10) then this one on top. I have also bought a factor 50 cream from Avene ( Boits Β£13.50). It is thicker in texture and although slightly tinted, it creates more of a white face look.
Someone told me yesterday that M&S have a new range with a factor 50 cream but have not had a chance to check it out.
Thanks for your advice, I've been on hydroxy for one week. How are you finding it ? I find it make me feel like I've been drinking and kinda spaced out. Going to start taking it just before bed for the next week and see how that goes.
Stay safe in the sun today π
Hi Lainy1. I have been fine with it, if anything a lot less tired than previously. I had to do 2 long drives in a week last week and was dreading it but managed. Had my first check yesterday & platelets dropped from 820 to 609 in 2 weeks ( I'm on 500mg). I take mine with breakfast. As I'm only 45, cobsultant keen to move me to interferon at some point.
She says interferon is more natural as it is hormon-based but it has worst side effects at first according to her. It is injection-based so would need to learn to inject.
Got checked after 2 weeks (bloods & appointment) and having another blood test in 2 weeks followed by telephone consultation.
Sound like you are getting well looked after. Do you have a nurse specialist you can phone if your worried about anything? I have constant ringing in my left ear. Think it was caused by taking asprin doc stopped it and put me on clopidogrel bit still ringing. On a more positive note the burning pins and needles in my hands and feet are much better.

Hi lainy
I also use ultrasun. Before diagnosis I used sf20 and 30 but now used factor 50. It is not greasy or thick in factor you can get it in tinted and glimmer now. Only have to apply once. Always worked for me before ET and have been in several very hot hols used SF50 since starting hydroxy and touch wood been fine . Also face one can get it in tinted and anti age and anti pigment. Lady who does it on QVC said it is now given on prescription . Hope you find one to suit you
Regards
Jane
Thank you for this help. I only have factor 30 but I do cover up. I think I will give M & S factor 50 a go. How I miss going for the burn...... not good for me I know.
Have a great day

I am ALWAYS so cold that my bones ache. Think it's due to thick blood and poor circulation. I loved the actual heat of the sun on my body. Now in sitting in the shade with FREEZING cold feet that my ankles hurt. I even have been known to take hot water bottles to bed, yes in the summer !

My feet are always cold! It's been really hot today (unusual for the north of England) but my feet are still cold.
Hi Lainy
I only met the specialist nurse 2 appointments ago when I went to discuss the results of my bone marrow biopsy. Must say it sent panic waves in my spine but she is lovely and thankfully the additional tests confirmed smouldering myeloma rather than active. I took anagrelide when I was first diagnosed but it didn't really bring my platelets down much and after a few months I started having palpitationd9. Been fine with aspirin over past 3 years but was starting to feel tired a lot. Better in past 2 weeks.
Have done a bit more daucream investigation. Could only see factor 30 in M&S but factor 50 suncream available ( my local store not very big so more choice might be available in bigger stores). Body Shop have a factor 50 daycream too.
Today I mixed the tinted and clear face versions of "La Riche-Posay - Anthelios XL for the face" and came up with just what I needed. No nasty niff, no shine and no need for foundation. I was careful not to put it too close to my eyes as in the past other suncreams have made them feel 'tired'. I can feel tired without any extra help thanks!
Hi. Don't know if you have access to EWG which is excellent at analyzing products, including sun protection products, for contains harmful or safe chemical ingredients. It's an acronym for Environmental Working Group and highly respected in US.
Hello from Oz where we sometimes get a bit blasΓ© about the sun. Now that I am on HU and going for a holiday in Darwin shortly I thought I had better see about a good face sunscreen. Bought some Ego Sunsense 50+ tinted, matte finish, oil-free base and it feels and looks nice and was not hugely expensive. I will just wear normal sunscreen on legs and arms and cover up with a long-sleeved cotton shirt over long pants and make sure I also wear a hat and sunglasses. Will look like the spy who came in from the cold !!
Hi Chris,
Thanks, I will have a look for that and see what reviews it gets. My daughter is on your side of the world just now traveling. They are staying with family in katumba. I miss her terribly. Not told her I've started on a chemo drug or she would cut her travels short.
Best wishes to you down under from UK

Hi lainy, I'm on 1000mg of hydroxy every day and no one has said anything about the dangers of the sun! Can you enlighten me please? Regards Carole.
Hi Carole, my heam told me that hydroxy makes your skin sensitive to the sun and to use a high spf. I sat all day on Friday in the shade but without factor, when I showered that night I had the v shape of my t-shirt on my chest. Thought I was ok because I was in the shade. I was never that sensitive to the sun before hydroxy. So i will have factor on even in the shade.
Best wishes lainy xx
I read this - hydroxycarbamide over a long period of time can develop skin cancer. You can reduce the risk of this by protecting your skin from the sun by wearing suitable clothing and using a sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. I would agree with vichy ideal soleil factor 50 but if you have sensitive skin like me it mildly irritated my skin. La Roche Posay Anthelios is brilliant and as ChrisAnnsen said you can mix a little of the tinted and the untinted one on your hand to get the right shade for you. I suffer from Polymorphic Light Erruption and this sunscreen prevents that which is amazing as you can imagine that it is very restricting to be allergic to the sun. Best wishes x
I'm so sorry to hear you have that terrible disease. Did not know what it was at first till i googled it. Thanks for reply, I've made my mind up now and gonna try la roche Posey.
Best wishes lainy π€
Hi, yes it has been a real problem along with everything else we have to contend with with our Mpns At least discovering the La Roche Posay gives protection has been a lifechanger. Hope you get on with it. If you google it you can often find it online or Boots often have it on offer. X
