Surgery on Monday

The hospital phoned me this morning to say that they have space for me to have parathyroid surgery on Monday, supposed to be May. I've been dreading this for about 3 months, now feel really nervous and have so much to do. Has anyone else had this done? Love Mel xx

Hi Mel,

I had half of my thyroid removed 17 years ago. I have a 5 inch scar around the front of my neck but the surgeon was very skilled and cut on a crease so no one can see it unless I point it out. I have had no problems since and don't need any medication as the half that is left makes up for the part that is gone. This was all before my diagnosis with PV so I can't help you in that respect, I would only say that the neck does not have many layers of fat like other parts of the body so I would imagine it will be pretty straight forward.

Thanks Judy. My neck has plenty of fat! I have put on 2 stone since I was diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism. A double whammy of fatigue has been unbearable. At least I will get some time off work to sleep. Mel x

Hello Mel,

My mother had the Parathyroid op when she was 83! Made her feel 53 - it really was a good thing for her to have done. You will be fine and all ready to enjoy the spring. I can't exactly remember how long mother was at recuperating but my fuzzy memory tells me she was up and out doing her usual running around very quickly. She lived well into her 94th year.

Hi Judy,

The surgery went well, but I had to have a blood clot in my throat drained last week, none to pleasant. The scar is amazing but the swelling is driving me nuts. I came back to work 2 weeks after the op and am managing ok. Thank you so much.
