Sun and hydrea
Hello have not started on HU yet, but was told it is not a good idea to spend time in the sun! I will find this hard because I just love the warmth of the sun! I think the main reason is, you have more chance of developing skin cancer. Not sure about the nausea. Someone else may have experienced this. I would be interested to know. Also whether it is true you have to keep out of the sun while taking HU or any of the Chemo medications. Lyn
Hi. I was told to avoid the sun as HU increases risk of skin cancer. Re pain/burning feet, someone earlier posted using cool packs under your feet to help. Good luck. Katie
I don't think this is related to HU. Before I started treatment I got these symptoms (I have PV) and was told these were symptoms related to this - but they are fairly rare as about 10% of people get. Heat will make it a bit worse as generally heat and dehydration makes all the symptoms worse. I've not had them since I started venesections so maybe you need your bloods checked.
Hi, I was told repeatedly not to be in the sun, if I had to be then cover up as much as possible, wear a hat and put sun cream factor 30 minimum, preferably 50 on any exposed areas. As others have said this is because Hydroxy increases our chance of getting skin cancer. I have no problems taking Hydroxy and it is keeping my bloods under control so it's doing its job for me although I'm on a high dose which I'd love to reduce. Best wishes, Frances
Hi Spikes nana,
Yes ,the heat makes me nauseous,I too love the sun and being outside.Find now six years on with P V,must stay cool.Difficult here where I live, temperatures reach 30+
Also, skin now does not tan ,but reddens and prickly. My Dr tells me 20 mins before noon for vit D ,then shade.I am taking Hydrea and other Meds.....re sore toes ,that too.Think a lot of us have that problem, mine swell too..I do use a good French total block but find it heavy on my skin,so opt for shade and a good fake tan !!!!Best Wishes to you,not too much worry for sun at the mo in U K ,I hear from daughter!!!Keep Well
Hi Spikesnana, I find with my ET the bottoms of my feet burn, also my feet swell in the heat, if you know of anyone in Australia see if they can send you some Solar D sun screen, it's factor 30 lets you into the sun without burning but let's the vitamin d from the Suns Ray's penetrate your bones, the Daily Mail paper has been singing its praises as one of the best sun screens going.
I had my friends in Aus send me some and both of them have suffered with skin cancer, and they also use this cream.
I know that we do not get the sun like they do down under but it makes you feel so much better being able to get outside in all that lovely sunshine, (when we get it ) great thunderstorm here in Kent tonight.

Hi everybody not on hu yet ,was talk about me going on it but on last check up postponed it for another month.on one of my visits the hematologist gave me a leaflet about hydroxy , which he printed off from mpnvoice.org.uk/ treatment hydroxy this may answer some of your questions ian60
Hi, the advice when taking Hydroxycarbamide is that your skin may be more sensitive to the sun, so you will need to protect your skin by avoiding exposure to the sun, using sunscreen and wearing protective clothing and a hat, and to stay well hydrated. I have not heard of anyone experiencing nausea, so you should speak to your doctor about this, also it would be advisable to mention your sore feet, just to find out what it causing it. Best wishes, Maz
