Hello, we advise that you eat a healthy balanced diet and stay well hydrated, you could ask your doctor to refer you to a nutritionist for some help and advice on diet and what is best for you. Best wishes, Maz

Hi,

Your haematocrit should really be below 45 ( I try to keep mine at 42) which will keep you feeling better so as Maz says have a word with your haematologist and push him to do something about it. A venesectin would soon sort that but may not be suitable for you, so discuss with him. You can find all the info on mpnvoice.org.uk.

You have to be firm with haematologists sometimes who will not always do as you wish. I had a haemo in the beginning 7 years ago who wanted to send me packing with a haematocrit of 48. I felt rotten, so told him I wasn't happy with his treatment and went off and found a haemo who specialises in PV - he is truly superb and I've never looked back.

Try a drink 2 to 3 litres of water every 24 hours. Sounds a lot, but buy a large pint glass, and start slowly one morning. If you can down 5 of those by the following morning ( DO NOT drink it all at once as you'll flush vital stuff out of your body ) then you'll be doing fine.

Try and avoid the rubbish in your diet, eg all processed and ready made stuff.

Lots of fresh veg, fruit etc. Fish every couple of days if you can alternated with a bit of meat. Why not look on Amazon for a healthy eating recipe book?

We're all different, and prefer different things, but it's really important to look after yourself. Try and go for a good brisk walk every day, even if it's pounding the pavements round the block......you'll be fine. 😊

Hi Louise. What difference does heamatocrit of 42 or less mean to you? Is your ferritin very low? I hope you don't mind me asking.

Thanks Mel

HelloLouise

How will you try make your hematocrit to 42. I had a good sleep and suddenly woke up with a high blood pressure. I hate this feeling. Sometime you feel fine especially in the morning. And when the afternoon come it feel weird.

Hi

No of course I don't mind.

If your haematocrit is high, as I understand it basically your blood is thicker than it should be. With PV as you know, we produce too many red blood cells which makes our blood thicker than it should be.

However, a haematocrit of 47 is absolutely NOTHING to worry about, but if mine goes above 45 I tend to get headaches and feel sluggish. Mine was 74 when I was diagnosed ( rather on the high side!!) and I survived so you'll see what I mean....

Explain to your haemo how you feel - these guys sometimes concentrate on the figures and not on how we feel, which is why it's important to find a specialist who understands MPNs and the symptoms.

Have a look at mpnvoice.org.uk, read as much as you can.

Where do you live?

There are MPN forums all over the uk run by this great charity, and you can meet up with fellow patients, ask all the questions you want, learn about your disorder, and generally have a jolly uplifting and enlightening time!

I just had my hemocratic check and I'm 45 now since that I tried to eat a lot grapefruit and drink green tea. I still feel nervous I the afternoon and feel energized in the morning. I'm a little weak now because I tried not to eat food that trigger my blood count. Do you think my blood count is getting lower because of the grapefruit I ate and green tea I drink?

A normal healthy, well balanced diet is all you need, don't take any iron supplements. As for the nervousness, you should talk to your GP who will be better able to advise you on this. Hope you feel more at ease soon worrying over your illness isn't good, enjoy your life to the full. Best wishes, Jill

Hi,

How do you know your blood pressure is high - do you have a machine?

If it is consult your GP.

I wouldn't really bother about the green tea and grapefruit stuff. It sounds as though you need some good old fashioned energy !

Try starting the day with a bowl of gluten free organic porridge ( available from Holland and Barrett) with some raw honey ie not supermarket rubbish whine is pure sugar with goodness whatsoever, fresh fruit, ideally blueberries.

Avoid all bought biscuits cakes crisps etc as snacks.

Make some home made biscuits, eat bananas and apples.

Lunch if you're at home try a bit of fish or cooked chicken, brown rice, fresh veg. Or take a decent sandwich, more fruit.

Supper as above! We don't need lots of meat in actual fact our daily intake only needs to be between about 2 and 4 oz. Fish is better. Eat LOADS OF VEG, brown rice, the odd baked potato.

Remember you can't lower you blood pressure or haematocrit yourself, but EXERCISE helps be it, walking running cycling .....will make you feel so much better.
