Your Bitter/Better philosophy is spot on - I often have to explain to my wife that although life sometimes doesn't seem 'fair' to her because the drunk, heavy smoker on our street seems in good health and I have had a SCT due to MF, being bitter about it isn't going to help and getting better (in health and as a person) is the way ahead.
